bunglehead Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 So there's this new law that apparently the Eugene PD is actually going to enforce about speed limits in school zones. The new law is that it's 20 mph at ALL TIMES in school zones (on streets where the posted speed limit is 35 mph or less.). AT ALL TIMES. What the fuck? No kids around at 2 am? TICKET. It's another example of how fucked the local government is down here. They won't investigate or prosecute thefts or break ins, but WHAM, a 231 dollar ticket for going 21-29 mph. Fucking police down here are so corrupt. I don't mind at ALL driving slowly when the kiddies are out, but JEEZUS, I have to drive slow even when they're sleeping, or in another town? MAKES NO SENSE. Bronco Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Don't be a stupid commie bastard. The reason for the change (and it will be changed in a lot of municipalities) is police are getting tired of people getting away with driving wrecklessly because they go in front of a judge and simply say, "hey, I didn't see any kids and the sign says it's only when kids are present". This will prevent losers from using this excuse. As the father of a first grader, I am all for increasing their safty. So sorry if it inconveniences you, (not!) Quote
jon Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Bronco, how much is junior deadlifting these days anyways? Quote

bunglehead Posted August 18, 2004 Author Posted August 18, 2004 That's fine, but with the shenanigans of the police department down here, it's more likely a way for them to make more money. And if anybody is speeding when kids arearound, they should get the maximum allowed penalty. I also agree that the "when children are present" is pretty damn vague, but making it 20 mph all the time seems excessive. How'd you know I was a bastard? Quote
Bronco Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 How'd you know I was a bastard? Your mom told me last night! Quote

foraker Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Whatever happend to those "Speed limit enforced when lights are flashing" signs? Seems to me those are mostly in school zones. Or would those be clever? Quote

bunglehead Posted August 18, 2004 Author Posted August 18, 2004 Now that seems reasonable to me. Quote

Camilo Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Flashing lights are definitely the way to go. It sucks when I'm late for work (pretty much every day) and I have to pass through THREE school zones, all 30-35mph, on the way and people are driving 20mph during SUMMER VACATION!!! They could also post a sign saying "20mph Aug 31-June6, 8am-10am/2-4pm." We've got signs like that all over the place (i.e. carpools, parking). Quote
bunglehead Posted August 18, 2004 Author Posted August 18, 2004 As in "Dukes of Hazzard" "Roscoe P. Coltrane" Roscoe? Quote

It's just another way for them to generate income. Quote
foraker Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 time to call the old city council-person (or whatever they call themselves these days) and suggest it. Quote
iain Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 time to get your spot on wildest police videos Quote
badvoodoo Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Whatever happend to those "Speed limit enforced when lights are flashing" signs? Seems to me those are mostly in school zones. Or would those be clever? Those are actually still in effect, but only in zones where the speed limit is >30 MPH. And yes, this law is as much about law enforcement as sitting OR state troopers in speed traps while they refuse to investigate domestic break-ins as policy (yes, this has happened). Quote
