ChocChick Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 All I want to do is get out of the city!!! Here's the thing, I don't know of any good places to go camping, because when I go camping, it is at the base of some climb. This weekend, me and my guy just want to throw some stuff in the car and car camp. If it is near some great trails, even better. Does anyone know of any really cool camping spots we can go to? If it is close to climbing, that's cool too! Some place that feels secluded, but not a 5 hour drive from Seattle. You know what I am talking about - getting away without really getting too far away. Help me people! Anybody? Anybody? Quote
Greg_W Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Head up the road from Index. Instead of turning left to go across the river, go straight...for a long time. Quote
selkirk Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 I've known a few people who liked going up out of Bluett Pass (I think? The one between Cle-Elum and L-town). Lot's of backroads up there and I doubt there are many people up there. Don't know about hiking but not very far from the Icicle and Peshastin. Quote
bird Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 I like the area around the Mountain Loop Highway near Granite Falls, although it tends to be a bit crowded. I think the hikes around there are pretty good. Plus it is really close. Quote
larrythellama Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 take the ferry and head over to the olympics. Quote
DirtyHarry Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 What the fuck does one do when they "camp?" Sit around the campsite all day and talk shit and drink beer? Without some type of activity lke fishing or hiking at least, how fucking boring. Might as well go to the casino. Don't go camping dude, what a waste. Quote
ken4ord Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Hey TUIB, Yeah what Greg said. I went driving up there weekend before last and there is a ton of good spots up there. That road cuts back on to 2 over in Skyhommish FR 6510 less crowded than the Index side. Drive up the Middle fork of the Snoqualmie and there is a whole bunch of spots up there but more crowded than the road up by Index. There is this little mountain pond up high above X38 that usually doesn't have anybody there, but you need 4x4 and not care about scratching your paint. All of these places are within 2 hours of the city. You should look into the Goldmyer hot springs $12 pp awesome spot. Have fun. Quote
bird Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 What the fuck does one do when they "camp?" Sit around the campsite all day and talk shit and drink beer? ..... Precisely. All you need is a bb gun to have some target practice on the empties. That's all the activity necessary for an extremely fulfilling experience. Quote
Alpine_Tom Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 There are a number of campgrounds lining HW 20, and plenty of hiking trails of varying difficulty all over up there. My guess is it'd be less crowded than the Mtn Loop hwy, at least midweek. You can reserve spaces in state campgrounds online, if you can plan a few days ahead. Quote

We don't plan on sitting around the camp site all day. 3. I'd rather sleep outside in my tent than spend the night in my hot, stuffy room in the shared house that I live in with 3 other roommates in the city. 4. We'll climb, scramble or hike during the day and cook, drink, laugh, talk, have sex and sleep at night. Sounds like a perfect day to me!!!! Quote
Bug Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Check out the Foss river road or the Beckler river road (which meets up with GregW's suggestion at Galena summit). Up highway 2 past index and Skykomish. There is a bridge immediately after you pass the turn to Skykomish (Beckler river and Skykomish come together immediately upstream). The Foss river road has some options that will get you really high and near some lakes (one is up the trail about 100 yards). From there, you could even do Malachite peak. The Beckler will have some nice camping along the river and a few places up high with nice views. Quote
Bug Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Woops. Forgot this part. The Beckler river road takes off left immediatly after Skykomish and before the bridge. The Foss river road takes off right immediatley after the bridge. It is not easy to forsee so slow dow down a little after the bridge. Quote

Go to Squamish or Index, dude. Quote
Dave_Schuldt Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 Darrington, there are 2 campsites on the road to Exfoliation Dome. One of them has a shiter across the road. Lots of climbing and hiking. Quote
MisterMo Posted July 30, 2004 Posted July 30, 2004 Second GregW's post about above Index. More specifically: 1) Upper North Fork Sky. At the end of the pavement above Index take the left fork; go all the way (Past Lake Blanca Tr, etc. ) to the end. BIG timber, Cool waterfalls & pools in the river up there; lots of good places to walk, not much to climb. A teensy bit buggy up there just now. But...it's a bit further...but...when I get the urge to car camp in heaven I suck it up & drive to Harts Pass. Do sunrise/set at Slate Peak, walk south to Grasshopper Pass. Quote
