After all the controversy that he had been through, his career seemed on the brink of a major turn around. I can only think of a few other cyclist that could animate a race like the pirate. Sad indeed

Indeed.

He was in select company winning the Giro, and the Tour in the same year.

from velonews: "Marco Pantani died of a heart attack and showed signs of cerebral edema and lung damage, according to initial reports from an autopsy carried out in Italy on Monday."

think its from doping? confused.gif

it aint from doping for performance.

i reckon enlarged hearts are common among endurance athletes which makes em susceptible to failure if they quit exercising. but i am not a doctor. and i dont play one on tv. and i havent slept at a holiday inn.

I've never heard that bit about endurance athletes being more at risk if they quit exercising. My guess is that it's something else.

i fukin tole you i aint a doctor. damn! but i did find this shizzle on the information superhighway: 'In athletes with an enlarged heart, there is a small risk of sudden death. This is not caused directly by the greater heart size, but rather by some other disease process.'

who the fuk knows what lead to heart attack in pantani? yet.

Even athletes are prone to heart failure because of genetics. My guess is that Pantani was high on coke and his heart stopped because of it. It's pretty sad what happened to him, I didn't really like how he reacted to when Lance gave him that stage win, but even then he still showed more class then most american athletes, and he was bigger Chumpo over there. It's a tough sport.

'ole one nut isn't the best person to lecture on class - his slagging on Cofidis - WHO PAID HIM WHILE HE HAD CANCER! is disgusting to me. How dare they ask for a medical exam!

So what you are saying is that you wouldn't be pissed if you lost your medical insurance when you got sick? Whatever dude. The assured him they would stand by his side and then asked him to take a test he clearly wouldn't pass.

Jon-

He was diagnosed with cancer just after he signed with Cofidis. Cofidis paid his bills even though they had no clue the status of his health - they just asked for a doctors checkup(one of the conditions necessary for a valid contract). Not unreasonable for $1.25 million a year! Instead of the Drs visit they compromised for Lance racing in 4 races in the '97 season - or they had the right to cancel the contract. He didn't - they walked.

more from velonews:

'Pantani was reportedly hooked on cocaine, which, when mixed with the anti-depressants, could have caused the swelling of the brain and lungs, which triggered a heart attack that was revealed in Monday's autopsy.

'Close friends of Pantani told the newspaper La Stampa that shortly before his death they had collected money to offer to the dealers to try and persuade them to stay away from the troubled cyclist.

'"We organized a fund to offer to the people who sold him the stuff to stay away because we knew he was at risk," the friends said.

'Newspapers said Pantani withdrew 20,000 euros from his bank account days before his death and that very little of the cash was found in his hotel room in which he died.'
