JERRY_SANCHEZ Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 I'm selling the 457 Pieps Avalanche Beacon. Almost brand new and includes fresh batteries, instruction Manuel and original case. I'm selling it because I bought it for $160 from a friend and a gift for my girlfriend but she went and bought the Tracker. I had this for few months and never used it. $140.00 OBO Quote
schnitzem Posted February 10, 2004 Posted February 10, 2004 I would like it - sending a PM right now. Â Shawn Quote
erik Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 one thing to note about the peips is that if it is the old analog model it will not pick up the newer digital beacons. so if you buy this make sure it is not analog. or you will never find your friends if they are buried. Quote
iain Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 say what? the yellow pieps does just fine picking up digital beacons. All beacons, digital or analog, transmit in the same fashion, if they transmit on 457. Quote
schnitzem Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 I think Erik was talking about those new fancy digital beacon cameras. Â They automatically start taking photos once an avalanche starts and then are uploaded directly to MTV Â Say What? Quote
vegetablebelay Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 I heard those are pretty big in Japan. Â Say What? Quote

All beacons, digital or analog, transmit in the same fashion, if they transmit on 457. Indeed! There are problems with frequency drift in all beacons as they age, leading to incompatibility (check at the trailhead!) $140 for a used Non-Digital old school beacon Quote
thelawgoddess Posted February 12, 2004 Posted February 12, 2004 don't fret too hard. go visit your local ski patrol hut and see what they're using. you might be suprised. Quote

iain Posted February 13, 2004 Posted February 13, 2004 plenty of old-school dual freq ortovoxs out there on ski patrol, most with the earpiece totally trashed Quote

Either you are trying to make a really bad joke, or your are sorely mistaken.  There is a tiny problem with some of the newer digital beacons not picking up older analog beacons who's signal frequency has drifted out of spec, but I have never heard of any problem in the direction you speak of.  Of course , if it is a really old[/i] analog model, 2.275 (?) frequency, then it won't work with any modern beacon.  If you have proof or sources that show otherwise, I would love to read them. marylou Posted February 14, 2004 Posted February 14, 2004 Sorry for the thread drift.  I'm a n00b so forgive me, but if there *was* an old 457 digi beacon versus a new digi 457 beacon compatabilty problem, this would show itself in the "parking lot beacon check" they taught us in class this week, right? Quote
snoboy Posted February 15, 2004 Posted February 15, 2004 ^^ Yes. Â But he is talking about analog versus digital, not old vs new... Quote
erik Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 analog is old and digi in new... Â we were out practicing 2 weeks ago with a yellow peips, a red on red, a m2 and a sos.... Â both the yellow and red pieps could not locate the m2....they located the sos. Â maybe i should have not used the word never.... Â but i still would not waste $140 buying outdated equipment...cause if look hard enough you can find newer gear for near the same price. Quote
snoboy Posted February 22, 2004 Posted February 22, 2004 I am very interested to hear more... Â Did any of the beacons locate the M2? Â What is a "red pieps???" or "red on red???" Â What do you mean by "could not locate?" Could you pick up any signal at all? Quote
erik Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 the red pieps is an old old one...tho still 457.... Â could not locate is that even with probing we could never get close enough to get them with the intial digging. Â yeah the sos found the m2 no probs. Â all i am saying is why buy an outdated piece of equipment?? sure it will work to some proximity...but i would not want my partners attempting to locate me with an old analog beacon. Quote
cj001f Posted February 23, 2004 Posted February 23, 2004 but i would not want my partners attempting to locate me with an old analog beacon. Sustitute "old beacon" and you'd be right. Analog has nothing to do with it. It's called frequency drift. Â And I agree that $140 is alot for a used beacon. Quote
