willstrickland Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Headed to Phoenix for work mid Feb. Want to get out and climb, close to town. Any suggestions? Quote
lummox Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 mcdowells. pinnacle peak. camelback. superstitions. queen creek. need more? Quote
EWolfe Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Queen Creek is the best. Good Tuff along the Highway, free camping, and below the camping area is the site of the Phoenix Bouldering Competition. About an hour and a half out of town. Quote
montanapup Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Oh my! Definately head over to Queen Creek. Try out the Pancake House....if you want to get some quick routes in, head to Camelback and do the Monk and a few others. McDowells are great too, Tom's Thumb.....if you want to head north a bit for some a ton of sport climbs with zero people, head to Jack's Canyon. Quote
arlen Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 QC's great for ticking off lines. My vote goes to the Superstitions if you want to soak up the Sonoran Desert experience along with some good climbing. Don't leave your rain gear behind! Quote
rat Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 (edited) jack's--lowest common denominator but great camping. queen creek--next lowest common denominator. what's "close"? i agree with arlen that the most interesting climbing nearby is in the supes. would recommend grandfather hobgoblin, the hand, weaver's needle (good solo) and routes on the wall one valley over from the weaver needle trail (don't recall the name). if you're going to drive a couple hours to get somewhere, there is good climbing near prescott (though it may be too cold) and sedona (the town is a worse fucking hole than phoenix) but the backcountry routes in the more southern part of the state (tucson and south) are where it's at. Cpt.Caveman Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 rat die for posting seriously. I am not impressed. Quote
matt_warfield Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Granite Mountain just out of Prescott should be warm enough on sunny days in February and offers awesome multipitch trad climbing. Expect stiff ratings and great granite. If it's cold stay closer to Phoenix. Quote
EWolfe Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 Rat's obviously not a crag-rat. He can bowl beercups strikes like a bastard, though. Quote
