If I get in some powder on Sunday, it will be unbelieveable, spring one week, fresh pow the next, man I love this state. BTW another rockin' thread people gettin' out and having a good time, I love it. to you all. Look forward to hearing about in all on Monday and Tuesday and later from the sounds of it for some of you all. Quote

thelawgoddess Posted January 25, 2004 Posted January 25, 2004 i went on my first backcountry tour today. it was a really short one since i had other things to take care of before work, but it was awesome anyway! Quote
iain Posted January 25, 2004 Posted January 25, 2004 today was great. tomorrow will be greater. Quote
mtn_mouse Posted January 25, 2004 Posted January 25, 2004 Don't want to make you jealous, but I have gotten out to ski (XC) every day for six weeks now. FRESHIEZ Quote
BelaySlave Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Knee Deep Wonderfulness !!!!!!! in source lake basin and above today. Spoke with two Alpental Ski Patrol on the way up. They said the area was mostly firm with 8-9" of POW. They were not jokin'....... Quote
Gaper_Jeffy Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 today was great. tomorrow will be greater. Would that be greater in windspeed, greater in the amount of flat light or greater in the length of lift lines at Meadows? My nose still tingles from the wind and--despite the tylenol--my head still hurts from this morning's skiing-induced vertigo. I guess Jack's Woods wasn't so bad when they finally opened it . . . Gaper Jeffey "I have to gape and save the world?" Quote
iain Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 jacks woods was okay. the lift lines to access jacks were not okay Quote
iain Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 coupla times I had to stop skiing and wait about 5 minutes to be able to see at least 5 feet ahead of me. Time to start carrying rocks in my pocket to roll down the hill Quote
thelawgoddess Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Don't want to make you jealous, but I have gotten out to ski (XC) every day for six weeks now. FRESHIEZ i'm not jealous. i have skied almost every day since the third week of november. but i will definitely be getting out into the backcountry more now! still need to try that xc thing, though ... nonanon Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Thanks and a shout out to all the nice skiers who left the few steep tree shots near Tilly Jane un-touched for me this afternoon. Mighty neighborly of you! -- yo, dag? Quote
mtn_mouse Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 boooooring haha Better than running or biking, anyday!!! Quote
Eerie Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 StP was *very* nice this weekend. I'd like to thank everyone who did snowdances last week. Quote
iain Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 nice! You need to show me around Newton Creek sometime. Never been there! Quote
Gaper_Jeffy Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 How do you you typically access Newton Creek? I ask as Van Tilburg's Backcountry Gape Oregon book recommends skinning up the Heather runout, ascending Pea Gravel, then descending into Newton Creek. It seems to me skinning up the Netwon Creek runout from the nordic area would make more sense. Quote
nonanon Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 There are several ways in, but my current fav is just to cross Clark creek and take a hard left heading up the spine of the ridge. Thread up thru the trees until you start seeing shots to your right or continue going up until you reach the bowls just above treeline. I've always been surprised how relatively hordeless this area has been in the past. All things must change, tho. Quote
