JUSTO Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 How many of you ice climbers carry a third tool? I always carry an extra for fear of dropping one and being screwed without an extra. I see a lot of ice climbing pictures where the climber does not seem to have a third. Scary! Quote
sobo Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 Do a search for "third tool", search by "entire phrase", select search for "all forums", and select "all posts" for the date range. You'll be surprised at the amount of discussion that *has already occurred* on this topic. Here's one from almost 2 years ago that resulted in some spirited discussion. Class dismissed. Quote
gnibmilc Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 what he meant to say was...unless you think you may need a third tool to throw at your belayer below, the only good thing to use a third tool for is to loan to someone who only has one. Quote
sobo Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 JUSTO, I just did another search with a variation of the search subject ("3rd tool") that turned up about another dozen threads. The possibilities are endless! Quote

cracked Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 Word. That's got to be the most heinous approach I've ever done! Quote
randygoat Posted November 4, 2003 Posted November 4, 2003 I used to carry one , but never needed one. I stopped bringing one along and I broke a pick 30 feet out from the belay on the third pitch of the Black Dike[ 5- Cannon Cliff, New Hampshire ] .Had to down climb on the stump, then borrow one of my partners tools to finish the lead.I might just start carrying a third tool again. Atleast on longer routes. Quote
