AARON1 Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Do you guys have any suggestions for skiing this late in the summer or is everything sun cupped and melted out. Any place in Oregon and Washington would work. Quote
mattp Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Pretty much everything will be suncupped (more so on south facing slopes), but I've skied the SW Chutes on Adams in August and it was fun (there were lots of rocks to dodge and you had to pay attention). I've found good skiing in August on the Fryingpan Glacier at Mount Rainier. Quote
skykilo Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 I just skied killer corn on Kennedy and Vista Glaciers on Glacier Peak last weekend, neither of which had much sun cupping. It's a lot of work to get there, though. Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan are good late season bets, too. Quote
skykilo Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 See the video linked in this thread for what I mean by 'killer corn': http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/threadz/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB2&Number=217916&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1 Quote
Dru Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Wedgemount Glacier You can ski the Wedge Couloir right thru the summer and fall. Quote
lummox Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 try skiing on liquid water. its pretty fun for a day or two. Quote
cman Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 i have not been there but i hear that mowich lake is good in the summertime. you can ski up to obervation rock ~ 9k. it is on the north side of the mountain so it probably won't be too cupped. i want to go up there but my enthusiasm for skiing has been lacking. pete_a Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 If you haven't already, you might want to check out http://www.turns-all-year.com There are a fair number of folks who put trip reports there on the usual late-season ski destinations. Generally some good bets of places to go are- Flett and Russell glaciers -Mt.Rainier Snowdome- Mt.Hood Hadley Peak- north of Baker Sholes Glacier and Coleman Pinnacle- south of Baker ski area I skied the Paradise glacier this past weekend, had to de-ski once to get in a run from 9000 ft down to 6200ft, pretty good snow, definitely better than the boot-tracked suncupped snow of the muir snowfield, had to end run a couple crevasses that were a bit wider than I wanted to hop over. Quote
iain Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 I have found that in recent years, Snowdome on Mt. Hood is a crevasse-infested annoyance by midsummer. Perhaps someone has been up Sunshine recently to prove me wrong? Quote
skykilo Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 lummox-you gotta boat? I'm down to go water skiing. Quote

skykilo Posted July 30, 2003 Posted July 30, 2003 Yeah, but if not, damn it, I'm gonna hike 30 miles. Quote
