Lambone Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 It's the closest big peak to home these days, can anyone recomend a fun route this time of year? Gracias Quote
Dan_Harris Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 Here is a route report link. http://www.shastaavalanche.org/reports.htm I have done Avy gulch twice before. I'm sure is is mushy now and some scree slopes up Misery Hill. The North Side Routes sound like they are in good shape. Quote
kurthicks Posted July 24, 2003 Posted July 24, 2003 lambone, when are you going? i was thinking of going down there next week 7/29-31... Quote
Bill_Simpkins Posted July 25, 2003 Posted July 25, 2003 Go up Clear Creek to aviod the crowds. Non technical. Very quiet. The moon shines bright on the route, if it's out. 6-8 hours to the summit from the car. Quote
aukushner Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 How is Shasta in september? depending on weather of course.. but is it worth it then? i would like to try the second or third weekend..... Quote
Lambone Posted August 12, 2003 Author Posted August 12, 2003 Isn't Clear creek a Talus field in the summer? We attempted the Hotlum-Bollum...got rained off the peak, but the route looked in good shape, we could see some icy sections from below. Quote
ridehikeclimbski Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 I was up Clear Creek last weekend , its mostly scree except on the Watkins Glacier from 9500 to 11000 ft . We didnt summit due to high winds , approximately 70 or 80 mph . What an experience watching clouds below sail by quickly at 13400 ft . The talus below the summit plateau is the worst part of the trail . The water from the spring is Crystal Clear and yummy ! Quote
Bill_Simpkins Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 Yeah, the class 2-3 scrambling near the summit plateau is a little harder when it's at 13,000 feet huh? I LOVE bad weather! That must have been great! Quote
