Stefan Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 It looks like I might be going to the Europe this summer for a family wedding and I will be looking at climbing some stuff. Can anybody recommend an Alps guidebook in English? Quote
wdietsch Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 Stefan,Where are you headed? France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland? The "Alps" in general cover a huge area. How much time do you plan on for climbing. A great website to get you started is www.peakware.comAlso keep in mind what time of the year you will be over there factors BIG on the crowds. Wes Quote
AlpineK Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 I was in the mounties book store back a month or two ago. They seem to have a big selection of euro climbing guides. I would go there and check it out. Quote
Ade Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 The (British) Alpine Club publishes guide to alpine routes for most of the Alps. You can buy them from The BMC online shop (I didn't check to see if they shipped to the US). There's also a bunch of English guides to European crags, but I'm not sure who does them, Chessler books might know. Ade Quote
Maurice Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 For the famous stuff try: The Alpine 4000m Peaks by the Classic Routes, Richard Goedeke, Menasha Ridge Press Quote
cj001f Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 If your looking for routes in Chamonix - try The Mont Blanc Massiff - the 100 finest routes (nice book to get you drooling) But the question still begs, where are you going? Carl Quote
Ade Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 Worth noting that the classic routes will be the most crowded by far. There's a lot less ice in the Alps than there used to be so many of the classic couloirs aren't in any sort of condition by mid season, a case in point being the Whymper Couloir. Several of the books mentioned, including some of the AC Guides may not take this into account. Quote
Stefan Posted January 3, 2002 Author Posted January 3, 2002 I am thinking of being in the western Austrian and Switzerland area. I know that still covers a lot of area and I will be there during the peak time, but I will be attending a wedding which I have no control over the date, and I do have to work, which I have no control over the time!
