David_Parker Posted May 20, 2003 Posted May 20, 2003 What is the best value currently out there? Must be sub 2 lbs, but not over $250. Sub $200 "on sale" would be much better. Prefer 700 or better Quote
allthumbs Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 I'd ask Beck or Crackbolter. They're the experts on this shit. Quote
bunglehead Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 I would recommend checking out www.MEC.CA for good deals on down bags. I just bought this crazy hybrid down/polarguard type bag that's toasty. With the exchange rate, you get a pretty sweet deal, even with shipping, and they are fast. I order stuff on Tuesday, and it shows up on Saturday. Their return policy is awesome. Return it for any reason. I highly recommend them. Quote
Crackbolter Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 Not me man, $200 gets you Kelty. $300 get you the best and only one you'll ever own. Kind of hard to beat. Quote
Fence_Sitter Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 (edited) perfect sleeping bag for you  $300 canadian down, -7c, 1.1 kg, good features... Edited May 21, 2003 by Fence_Sitter Quote
JoshK Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 I saw that one too, but he said under 2lbs. That's more like 2lbs 6 or 7oz. Â In reality, I think if you want a sub 2lb bag of that range, you are looking at more than what you want to spend. Quote
JoshK Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 Well, here is a 30 degree bag for $250 exactly: Â http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=13818390&parent_category_rn=4500514 Â they pack decent packs, but mountainsmith is new to sleeping bags as of last year. Â Â If you believe Kelty, for $150 you can get a "25 degree" bag that's 2 pounds: Â http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?catalogId=40000008000&langId=-1&storeId=8000&productId=47650379 Quote
JoshK Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 ACtually, fuck the kelty, I'm sure that weight is BS anyway. For your needs I'd get the REI sub kilo bag: Â http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?catalogId=40000008000&langId=-1&storeId=8000&productId=11449612 Â They are actually pretty decent for the price. It's a pertex shell and decent quality down. 20 degrees, 2lbs 1oz, and only $209. Quote
Sphinx Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 If you get the sub kilo, get rid of the compression stuff sack, that thing adds four oz! Quote
JoshK Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 "Comes with an ultralight compression stuff sack and cotton muslin storage bag " Â But it's ultralight! Â Also, what's a muslin storage bag? Is that one of them things they wear on their heads!??! BWAHHAAH Quote
Sphinx Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 Whatever, I weighed the sleeping bag (ok it was long, not regular), in the stuff sack, and it weighed 2.5lbs. Then again, the Cat's Meow was 3.5 lbs. Gear weighs too much. Then again, I'm not in shape enough either. Oh well... Quote
allison Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 Been pretty happy with the Marmot Arroyo, retails for 259$ but they are easy to find for much less. Advertised weight is 1#14 oz, can't remember what mine weighs. Compresses very small. Â Another vote for the REI Sub Kilo as well. Good bag. Â Â Quote
Ursa_Eagle Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 I don't remember where I saw it, but I think I've seen really good reviews for the mountainsmith bags. I'm a little wary about going really light though, as you'll prolly be sacrificing durability (and longetivity). I'm thinking that if I'm going to be spending $250 or so on a bag, drop the extra $50-$100 and go for a FF. Quote
