I live 85 miles north of SLC, though you're welcome to the floor. The easiest way to get to Park City from the airport is to take a shuttle bus. That's one of the appeals of Park City for skiers visiting Utah; You don't have to rent a car.

check this for ideas on what's available.

As for cheap hotels, you'd be hard pressed to find something cheaper than this.

Timmay, if you want to stay in Salt Lake, there's a youth hostel in the avenues that's supposed to be pretty cheap (the avenues are the neighborhood on the hill on the north end of town). Don't know why you're going to Park City (work?) but staying in Salt Lake and riding in the Cottonwoods is a WAY better experience than what Park City has to offer. There are several ways to get up the canyons from SLC using public transit, however the routes are kinda screwy these days and take longer than they should.

Second what E-rock said. Unless you have another compelling reason to go to Park Shitty, skip it for one of the Cottonwood canyons. Hard not to ski Alta if you ski and don't board (no snowboards allowed at Alta). The city runs public transit all over and up both canyons to the ski areas. Once you get close to the base of the canyons, hitching is possible. I've done it successfully and have seen many others have success too. Salt Lake is sprawl and the public transit is far from efficient, better to stay somewhere close to the bottom of the canyons to make the trip to the ski areas a little easier. Then take a shuttle the longer distance between the hotel and airport.

the main reason i'm getting to go at all is i have to check out the ticketing system at our parent resort (PC) in action and report back to the higher ups, so i'm kind of tied to going to PC.

I've got other views about that. SLC has a new light rail system called TRAX that works very well. A model system really. It came online just before the Winter Games.

Just take a bus from the airport to Park City, and stay there.

I haven't spent any time in Salt Lake in a few years. I do remember looking at the bus schedule and thinking it took longer to get places than it should have. Glad to hear they've built a nice system since then. Efficient public transit makes city living far more enjoyable.

Amen. Man it pisses me off that places like SLC can get good public transit and we still drag our feet on it in Seattle.

Well, if you recall, there was this high-profile winter sports event in Salt Lake last year. Part of that involved getting lots of funds for public transportation (the Interstate 15 has been undergoing construction pretty much the whole time I've lived in this state), and part of it involved the largest domestic deployment of troops ever. Last February was not the time for backcountry, night-time skiing.

The funniest part was that the city handed out bus tickets to Las Vegas to every homeless person they could find. I don't know if they comped them casino credits, though.

BWAAHAHh...that's funny about the homeless people. I bet LV was thrilled smile.gif Yeah, good point about the olympics. I guess SLC probably benifits in the long run besides just the influx of retail money from the olympics. Whatever the reasons, however, it's still ridiculous that seattle can't get it's act together. It's not like this is a small city any more.

i can go pitch my tent in temple square?

Yeah, I doubt it. They wouldn't even let me take a nap on the Tabernacle lawn.

I wonder if public sex on the tabernacle lawn would go over well in mormon-ville? smileysex5.gifyelrotflmao.gifthe_finger.gif

Tim, Do you want to stay in SLC or PC? My bro lives in PC. I'll check with him. For skiing, I agree the Cottonwoods rock, but for partying, nothing beats Park(less) City. You just need to know how to navigate the club situation. For one or two nights, just hang out in front of the bar you want to go in and ask someone to "sponsor" you. One membership gets something like 8 people in and lasts 2 weeks. Once your in, you don't have to hang out with them. If you know a local, you'll be fine.

We used to take 'shrooms and go down to the Mormon square at christmas to see all the lights. Friggin' spectacular!!!

I stayed at the Embassy Suites (on my wife's company tab). Their corporate rate was $89 a night, and included a cooked breakfast and complimentary cocktails every evening. Close to downtown and only two blocks from TRAXX.
