  1. What I love about the internet. People making random generalizations about people who made random generalizations based on 2 lines on an internet message board. Intelligance at its finest!
  2. You mean an extraordinary aptitude for promotional and marketing work to obtain the necessary funding for Himalayan climbing?

  5. 90% of that has been in the past 4 years. The sad part is security is being used as a cover to restrict public access to legislators and the legislative process.

    Airport security

A former coworker was threatened by the stewardess when he pointed out that if his plastic knife was sharp enough to cut the steak, it could cut a human.
  7. "wood boat" is really a misnomer. Most "wood" kayaks are fiberglass kayaks with a wood core, and are pretty durable. About as much as a glass kayak would be. If you really want durable go with plastic. I built a Chesapeake 17 (as pictured above), from plans (they also sell kits), cost me about $1100, including outfitting. Lots of fun, but you don't save money.
  8. Make your own!
  9. link We spent less than the total cost of that program between 11pm and midnight in Iraq. That's just as useful a comparison as the IRS and medicine.

  12. And none of the software I need for work will run on a Mac. Makes it a non-starter. Fine if all you need is to browse the web and process words though

    favorite poem

Rupert Brooke (various) Jealousy WHEN I see you, who were so wise and cool, Gazing with silly sickness on that fool You’ve given your love to, your adoring hands Touch his so intimately that each understands, I know, most hidden things; and when I know 5 Your holiest dreams yield to the stupid bow Of his red lips, and that the empty grace Of those strong legs and arms, that rosy face, Has beaten your heart to such a flame of love, That you have given him every touch and move, 10 Wrinkle and secret of you, all your life, —Oh! then I know I’m waiting, lover-wife, For the great time when love is at a close, And all its fruit’s to watch the thickening nose And sweaty neck and dulling face and eye, 15 That are yours, and you, most surely, till you die! Day after day you’ll sit with him and note The greasier tie, the dingy wrinkling coat; As prettiness turns to pomp, and strength to fat, And love, love, love to habit! 20 And after that, When all that’s fine in man is at an end, And you, that loved young life and clean, must tend A foul sick fumbling dribbling body and old, When his rare lips hang flabby and can’t hold 25 Slobber, and you’re enduring that worst thing, Senility’s queasy furtive love-making, And searching those dear eyes for human meaning, Propping the bald and helpless head, and cleaning A scrap that life’s flung by, and love’s forgotten,— 30 Then you’ll be tired; and passion dead and rotten; And he’ll be dirty, dirty! O little and free And lightfoot, that the poor heart cries to see, That’s how I’ll see your man and you!— 35 But you —Oh, when that time comes, you’ll be dirty too! Blake - that's a classic
  14. Not as expansionist? WTF?
  15. Pack for cold, wet and rainy. Bring along things for occaisonal warm weather. Chilean Patagonia is wetter than Paine/Fitzroy and much more lush. My .02 from 2.5 months there. I'd think NOLS will give you a long list of what they "require" you to bring. Just outside of Coyhaique If you need financial assistance why not take a climbing course in the US? You could spend a lonnggg time in Patagonia with the difference in price. $5k takes a long time to spend in Patagonia - alot longer than the month you get for whatever class you take.
  16. Software, schmoftware, compatibility, schmopatibility.
  17. It is, with breeder reactors. The US doesn't like breeder reactors because there are groups who want fissile material for "other" uses, so this requires higher security (countries like France are willing to provide this security). Fusion power (if it ever gets off the ground) would produce a limitless supply of energy. But with every science project budget cut it's day gets farther away.
  18. On an absolute scale, yes. on a relative scale, no.
  19. And Jean Shorts are the epitome of fashionable. Particularly with a Hypercolor t-shirt.
  20. Tabbed browsing? In browser searches from multiple sources? Security? That's nothing?
  21. Or spend the $3 billion on the roads that employers say they need to lure more workers?
  22. Sorry = money not diversifying WA's economy The commercial airline business will go down again, Boeing will lay people off again. Why not invest in something not tied so directly to economic trends? It's smart business.
  23. = money not spent diversifying the Seattle economy, providing a broader base of jobs, making it less cyclical.
  24. And give you the satisfaction?
  25. That's right. Car's are more efficient at 70mph.
