"wood boat" is really a misnomer. Most "wood" kayaks are fiberglass kayaks with a wood core, and are pretty durable. About as much as a glass kayak would be. If you really want durable go with plastic. I built a Chesapeake 17 (as pictured above), from plans (they also sell kits), cost me about $1100, including outfitting. Lots of fun, but you don't save money.

I'd think NOLS will give you a long list of what they "require" you to bring. Just outside of Coyhaique If you need financial assistance why not take a climbing course in the US? You could spend a lonnggg time in Patagonia with the difference in price. $5k takes a long time to spend in Patagonia - alot longer than the month you get for whatever class you take.
