If someone paid for me to travel across the world for a few weeks and the only contingency was I had to pose for a few pics and climb some boulders, I'd consider it a junket. Minimal work for a paid vacation. Not that I wouldn't snap at the chance, I just don't think it's admirable or noteworthy. I like wfinley's analogy.

Yes. If you aren't there to learn something about another place, and via that hopefully yourself, stay the fuck home - or realize that you are just another tourbot on a cruise. And no I don't think it's worthy of anything that he got someone to pay for a junket - and I don't think the pictures are much different from a spread in the US bouldering destination du jour because they include some brown people.

Columbia bought Mountain Hardwear for $36 million. I'd say Mountain Hardwear is easily worth 2.4x Montrail. Outdoor businesses aren't worth squat, usually last years sales, barrier of entry to low, brand value too ephemeral.

Oh very true, and I agree with you. I guess I was (unsuccessfully) trying to argue that most everything in adventure/actionsports/travel photography is a prop now. The emphasis is on active, attractive, young white people being "adventurous" and the rest is background. To me it's best exemplified by the trend towards bouldering "adventure" photography - the shots of sharma and brown at Hampi aren't much different in objectificatioin than sharma at the Buttermilks or sharma at Castle Hill or sharma at Fountainebleau. The backdrops are (non white) people or exotic mountains and there is no connection between subject and background. All to deleterious effect on humanity IMHO. It's all beginning to look like the sports illustrated swimsuit issue - you could just photoshop someone into a landscape.

National Geographic Adventure publishes plenty of his shots - just the ones with boats, skis and jeeps as props - not brown people. The editors were trying to convey a sense of exotic place and people are part of what make a place exotic. I'd rather have them included, if only as props, than completely excluded - which is more a return to the past, when natives were only background not worthy of any notice. I suppose excluding the natives does fit well with todays jet set adventure - fly in, travel ASAP to basecamp, then flee back to Boulder as quick as possible. The world as jungle gym.

I guess I wasn't clear. My weekend courses focused on companion and party self rescue. NSP Basic, in my experience, focused more on large (>20 people) rescues for groups of unknown/unsure size. Different skills - and companion rescue is proven the most efficent means of BC rescue, so probably a better use of time. Neither spent a terribly large amount of time on routefinding etc, but the other courses were, again, more oriented towards a BC participant. My .02 having taken both.

Nothing particularly nefarious, just that the basic NSP courses like Avalanche, in my experience, spend as much or more time on being a rescuer, rather than on avoiding rescue. The latter is necessary in the backcountry, proper probe line technique isn't, and there are other outfits that aren't much more expensive and require less time that would give you better BC skills quicker. Join ski patrol if you want to help people and learn firstaid skills or improve your existing firstaid skills, would like to meet interesting people, and like skiing & the outdoors. It'll probably benefit you in that order, it did me.

You can get as good/better deals by paying attention to sales. I wouldn't reccomend the NSP basic courses for BC travel or Avy skills.

I think it's the commie hater in you JayB. Many people loathe Mccarthy for his populist hysteria and witchhunts, not because he persecuted the left. Try to grasp that - and perhaps you'd do well to remember McCarthy had no evidence to support his claims. There isn't much that's come out to show he actually knew the people he was accusing were communists. My comments at the end were not a non-sequitar. The abrogation of private liberties and the extreme power of the executive were some of the hallmarks of the soviet - more irritating to me the property rights.
