  1. I would be interested in skiing Buckner, but right now it sounds like way too much work and way too much danger. From what I hear of your plan 3 days is too little time, and like Lowell said the approch over Sahalle is dangerous. About this time last year I skied into the Cascade Pass parking lot and spent a couple days. We were able to drive the road to mile 20. The first day we had a nice ski from the pass, but that evening a storm rolled in with big winds and the next day we set off a couple small slabs skiing in the trees. We would have died trying to ski anything in the open. That was a low snow year. Good luck, and think hard about doing some midweek lift skiing. Its fun even though you may not get a tough guy award. I haven't read the SA article, but I did check out the above link. While the article does defend Lomborg, the article also points out that he is flying solo when it comes to his ideas. For his theory to become something worth listening to a few other independent reasearchers need to come to his same conclusion. And they shouldn't get their paychecks from; Texaco, Exxon, Shell, ect...

    lets kill todd

One of them Neutron bombs might be a good solution for the CO problem. Kill all the wankers (Todd) and yet leave the area usable to the rest of us. Or a few Daisy Cutters might do the trick.
  5. Caveman and others. Given the participation by Tacoma people and the fact that the Pub Club has not been down there for a while I am squarely behind Tacoma as the real Pub Club this week. I would be happy to support a Issaquah Pub Club next week (though I may have other plans that tuesday).

We don't want somebody "without a stake" who might not know Denny's from Hatties Hat. Or worse than that, they might decide we'd all be healthier if we stayed home and followed Dr. Jay's advice to drink in our own back yards -- they might set the pub clubs for Forks or something. Matt either you didn't get what I wrote , or I didn't explain myself enough. I'm just saying that someone should pick the region Seattle, Tacoma, Issaquah and then those people in the area pick the bar. For example: this week Tacoma, next week Issaquah, Following two weeks Seattle, and then back to Tacoma

    420

Ya know captn has over 3000 posts, but I would like to beat my chest about reaching 420. I was hoping maybe Scott'terex could add a few words. That would make this an extraspecial event for me.

In the future, instead of the first person to post a venue getting his/her way, we need an schedule maker without a stake to set a shedule for which area we are meeting in. I would sugest a 4 week rotating schedule: 2 weeks Seattle1 week Tacoma1 week a no holds barred fight between outlying areas..Issaquah, Monroe, ect... Once the region is set then folks can fight to the death over which bar.

    More spray!

So speaking of Boulder. I was living in this house with a couple roommates. One Roommate was named Ron, or as he told me after I had told him I was into climbing, "My nickname is Teton Ron cause I've climbed the Grand 5 times." Anyway I had gotten in a wreck up in Summit County, and I was dealing with the other drivers insurance company and getting estimates for fixing my pickup. One afternoon I came back from work and there was Teton Ron hanging out with a friend. He introduced me and told me his friend did, "body work." I got excited and ask Teton Ron's friend to look at my pickup and give me an estimate to fix it. The two of them gave each other a funny look and then Teton Ron told me, "um Kurt my friend does massage therapy." Only in Boulder. I'm sure glad people in Seattle know what body work is.
  11. So I read that Lonberg article and while I know nothing of the guy, and I am not motivated enough to check up on his background or data I won't believe what he has to say without further proof. I've read or heard of plenty of scientific studies that disagree with his findings. One experiment or study does not prove anything other than more study may be needed. In order to create what most people would call scientific facts you need to have multiple independent studys that come to the same conclusion. Fairweather says this guy was a commited enviro until he started doing his reasearch. Well is he? What else has he written before he became anti-eco? More importantly who was paying for his reasearch? There are just too many vested interests with big bucks behind them (petrochemical industry ect..) who would love to have, "science," that backs up the status quo. As Dru pointed out look at the tobacco industry. They paid for a bunch of people with scientific credentials to put out, "research," on how safe cigarettes were.
  12. Dan are you still steamed about that PM CJZ sent to you? I was rolling on the floor laughing when he wrote that, and no I am not CrazyJZ
  13. I'm way into how you get to the summit not whether or not you summit. Too bad your partners weren't. Sounds like a fun trip though!

Todd do you live in a vegan commune in Boulder? Do you and your household strive to live in harmony with nature? PS Are you a trustafarian? [ 02-01-2002: Message edited by: AlpineK ]
  17. F, The first book I recomended isn't political in nature (as far as I can tell) it is does bring up some interesting shit on how us european types ended up on top of the heap. The second does rag on republicans, however if the author had focused more on Chickens and the Tyson Co. he admitted he would have been ragging on politicians from Arkansas...democrats..Bill Clinton.
  18. I've met Mike G a couple times. He is an example of what all rangers should strive to be.
  19. Fairweather you suck big time. Yes Osama Bin Laden and his buddies are evil and should be wiped off the face of the planet. But to subscribe to the view that we are good just because someone evil attacked us is wrong wrong wrong. I think you may have watched to much Star Wars as a child. Osama is a meglomaniac. He just uses the bad points about the US and western culture in general to win support for his cause and inflate his ego. Even if we hadn't been attacked the bad parts of our culture would still be there. We should be trying to improve our behavior and habits. You and your buddy George W are just trying to preserve and protect the old school rich folks. What we really need is new and inovative thinking not the same old bullshit, and you know what, I bet there is a lot of money to be made by people who can find new ways to produce stuff in a sustainable manor.

Todd,There is a large concentration of great rock climbing near Boulder; however thats not all there is to life. I found after I moved there that; most of the people in CO sucked, since it is a desert state there is never a decent base to ski on (even though the pow is nice), avalanche conditions are always higher, and ice can be good, but with so many climbers and so little water it all gets hacked to shit. You seem to be a major sucker so stay there
  21. I've read a couple books recently that I think many of you who have posted would appriciate. One book, Guns Germs and Steel, points out that it is an inevitable law, like gravity, that a culture that is more technologically advanced will overrun cultures that are less advanced. While there are horrible concequences that one can read about, like the europeanization of America; you can't avoid reality. I've also read a book called Fast Food Nation, which will make you vomit when you read about meat packing, but it also brings up some interesting conclusions. The author points out a number of laws that should be inacted, but then he points out that in reality they will never be inacted due to presure from the meat packing and fast food industries. He concludes that the only effective way to make a change is for people to vote with their pocket books. All business follows the law that the customer is always right. So buy a smaller car or better yet one of these new hybrids, don't go to McDonalds or Burger King, buy the more expensive, "organic," meat, milk, ect, and try to consume less stuff. I think Fairweather's views suck, but he is right that government regulation is ineffective and often bad. Support politicians who subscribe to a more environmetally sensitive view, but vote with your pocketbook.
  22. Don't let Fred get you alone in a dark room Caveman; especially if he's been talking about marmots all evening.
  23. quote: Originally posted by Cpt.Caveman: YOu guys go where you want. I will be there tuesday with some other friends if nobody else shows up well... I got more beer to drink. Buddy, I see Tacoma Folks all the time drinking at Seattle Pub Clubs but no Caveman.
  24. So I went up towards Chair peak basin with my friend C on wednesday. Once we got up to Source lake my friend C and I rapidly started scaling back our goals. We skied up to just below the upper basin on Chair and skied down. I managed to set off some small slabs with a 1' crown (these were on short steep sections and not to be confused with a real avalanches). We decided that the only slopes we really wanted to ski were going to slide and so we headed back to the car. I should add I went to Crystal today and it fuckin ruled!!!! Lots of light pow, plenty of face shots, and nobody on the mountain. Brain Damage is starting to get fat. So if you want to be a hero and tell everyone you skied off the N Face of the King this is a good year for that. Also to any of you backcountry types that are too cool to ski at areas. Your all a bunch of suckers!
  25. To be fair I think it's time to go to Tacoma. I wanna see Dwayner on his lips
