  1. Pyramid tarps have been used for decades in the mountains, often by guide outfits and schools (e.g. NOLS/Outward Bound). In fact, the center pole has been referred to as a 'chastity pole' because it keeps everything kosher between the inhabitants.

I've seen them used at 17k on Denali as cook tents. The only new thing about this one is the fabric, Cuben Fiber which seems to be another flavor of Aramid/Dyneenema/Spectra. A big improvement would be to incorporate large tunnel vents, like those used on Integral Designs tents, to improve air circulation and cut down on condensation.

  2. I am selling a pair of brand new, still in plastic, un-mounted K2 Shuksan backcountry skis. Designed by Martin Volken specifically for PNW conditions, these are the classic all around AT ski.

    Dimensions:

    167cm long

    119-78-105

I've looked around and the cheapest price I've seen is $200, so I am asking $180. I am open to trades/partial trade for BD Cobras (new models), Petzl Quark, or Petzl Nomic, or a late model Toyota Prius.

Also selling a women's large Marmot down sweater, 650 fill. Perfect conditions. $50 and a women's large Patagonia Better Sweater (fleece), perfect condition $50.

  3. The reviews on STP are all glowing. For $216 it is hard to go wrong, especially with STP's return policy which is the best in the business. I have been shopping with them for almost 25 years and returned a number of items with never a problem. These boots are way sexy too!

  4. "I hesitate to write about soloing the North Face of Chair Peak because it is the most important climb of my life. It has taught me a great deal about climbing and the climbing community. It has taught me that action is more important than posturing. Climbing itself is about action. Life is also about action. Anything else is just window dressing. But, I have to write about it. I hesitate also because any type of writing about climbing is usually fraught with misunderstanding, and elicits questions about motives from the audience. I will try to avoid this by writing this for myself primarily, and for the public secondarily. It seems that it is a rare breed indeed that can write about their own climbs at any length without garnering condemnation from the hoards of arm-chair climbers."

These jackets will also fit slimmer men. I am 5'9, 42" chest and they are a bit short in the sleeves and too tight in the shoulders and chest.

  6. I was curious about who this Annie Green Springs was so I Googled the name. Turns out it is not the name of a climber but a cheap fortified wine. I guess that makes sense for a route name on one of the Wine Spires.

Further Googling indicates the Mary Green Glacier on Bonanza Peak is named after a ladies underwear manufacturer, apparently.

  7. The Coach of UW Rock fame has taken up permanent residence at Index. He lives in a van down by the river. I think if you park near his encampment he would scare any potential thieves away. Bring him a peace offering of tin foil so he can make a new hat.

  8. I am confused, were two VW youth climbing coaches killed in separate climbing accidents in the last few days?

There were two young men killed this weekend in separate, unrelated accidents. One on Spontaneity Arete, one on Infinite Bliss. I believe both were affiliated with different gyms, not sure if they were both involved in coaching. It is very sad, with the recent fatality at Skaha, that makes three young men who left us too soon over the past couple of weeks.

  9. Well the bit about blacking out your address on your registration so the thieves can't go back to town and burglarize you seems like a great idea if it really is ok with the cops.

It's a RCW issue. So it really can't ever "OK with the cops".

The reality is cops do whatever the fuck they want, regardless of RCWs. The cop who pulled me over was more interested in my job and who I worked for than the fact my address had been redacted from the registration or even the fact that I had been driving 10 miles per hour over the speed limit in a school zone. No ticket.

  10. Well the bit about blacking out your address on your registration so the thieves can't go back to town and burglarize you seems like a great idea if it really is ok with the cops.

I redact the information on my registration for this reason and was pulled over by a cop who just nodded when I explained why the address was redacted.

  11. Furthermore, lack of permanent shelters (such as low impact huts, ubiquitous in B.C.) would actually reduce impact as it consolidates and makes use easier to manage.

Excellent point, I've been beating that drum for a while now.
