  1. "Most counselors realize that college rankings are largely ineffective for creating a list of colleges that match a student’s interests, abilities and needs, because the student’s needs were not taken into consideration when the rankings were created." http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/08/opinion/when-college-rankings-are-inflated.html go somewhere where you won't get burned out, not somewhere that other people tell you is the best.
  2. yes! I haven't tried it but I guess the wall at stone gardens is a good way to get some practice. I hear they only change the routes up once a year though, so not only a drytooling wall but drytooling routesetters.
  3. leave it to me to totally miss that, I think my dad did his masters in teaching through a online program with seattle U. A online degree in chemistry might be a little harder... BUT YES YOU COULD DO IT FROM ANYWHERE. Speaking of chemistry I'm studying for a test tonight and kinda regretting putting that off until now. The math isn't hard, just a ton of memorization, this is second semester of gen chem though, the fun stuff doesn't start until next semester in organic. I'm curious, what makes you want a degree in chemistry?
  4. part 2? I want to know where that place is, I'd rather go climb there myself!
  5. In bozeman you could probably get a job at BioScience labs while you get your degree. they employ smart people both part and full time and probably pay decently well. http://www.biosciencelabs.com/ they do studies for products and pay college students to be guinea pigs. I was going to do something for them last week but then I cut up my hands mixed climbing with no gloves on (idiot). Look into the chem department here at MSU http://www.chemistry.montana.edu/graduate/ check it out, I find I do better in school when I can get away for a day or two a weekend (or after class) and go play in the mountains. Of course you have to find a balance, but it's what keeps me sane. BTW my grades are good. And the proximity of Phoenix is what kept me from going to northern arizona in flagstaff. that place isn't where you'd want to spend any amount of time.
  6. and that's the sequel! more fake boobs than crabs. a buddy of mine at UW watched it with his frat bros (weird) and said the acting was surprisingly good. I guess there's some kind of plot. maybe someone could watch them and post up a synopsis.
  7. something in the south fork would be incredible. the area is beautiful, and camping up at deer creek gets really cold at night, with a cozy little cabin to snuggle up in... I can't think of anything better. Driving from cody to the ice takes around a hour, cutting that out would be so prime.
  8. pure distilled water won't freeze until -39 degrees.
  9. also if you hate black people, and jews, and gays, and gypsies, and hispanics, and slavs, and australians, then yeah north idaho is probably the place for you. Otherwise come to bozeman.
  10. but you'd have to live in new england. fuck that. montana is seriously one of the best places in the US of A.
  11. well shit, I guess if you're really desperate and not 35 you can hang out at the frats and fuck the frat sloots. might come down with a acute case of herpes/hep/syphilis/children. at least you'd have tons of brrrrrrooooooss to hit the park with. you sure about that ratio being throughout bozeman? I guess I don't really check out dudes when I'm walking mainstreet...
  12. Drep, for undergrad the ratio sucks, kicking it around town though there seems to be a limitless supply of 20 something hotties. For a grad student who wants to ice climb and perhaps get some poon I can't imagine a better place. undergrad though yeah, 2 new girls showed up in roskie at the semester and there was at least 15 dudes trailing them for at least a week. when guys realized that the cute one had a habit of chewing the crowd of dudes thinned out to around 8. Not to dis on the girl, she's a very nice lady and one of the coolest chicks around, just gotta be careful before you go in fer a lip lock.
  13. Forgot to add, Gaines hall (chemistry building) was just remodeled in 2010, brand new facility. I'm not sure about the actual program. I'm in gen chem currently and it's alright, but I'm not sure how it'd be for a grad student. send some emails, or get a biology degree, that department has some smart people heading it. Washington and oregon have no ice, or at least the small amount there is difficult to access and isn't consistently in. I've been out in hyalite every weekend since the end of october. The drive is 30-40 minutes from town, never hiked more than a hour and a half (east fork) and usually get 5 or 6 pitches in minimum per trip. In washington I'll read about something being in here on CC, drive for a couple hours, hike for 3 or 4 hours, climb half a pitch of mediocre and scary delaminating ice, and then hike out in the dark. frankly I don't really have fun climbing ice in WA. that route on strawberry mountain in oregon looks awesome though, might have to check that out, but again, not nearly as accessible as the stuff out here.
  14. I'm at MSU, couldn't be in a better place. You think bozeman is a bunch of tree huggers? standard fare for a weekend would be driving up into the woods, getting shit wasted, and drunkenly cutting trees down to build massive bonfires. Everyone owns a gun, it ain't no town fulla liberal homos if thats what yer thinkin'. there's a remarkable number of attractive women in the 20-30 age range, and most of them can outski you with minimal effort. There's even a highschool off 11 ave if that's your thing. The ice in hyalite is hard to beat, within a hour hike you can climb pretty much anything in the main fork, approaches in flanders and the east fork are a little longer. Most people you meet in the canyon are friendly and will gladly offer you a TR lap if they have a rope up (this could just be climbers in general). plus the routes are fantastic. where did you get your undergrad? here's a buddy starting off on thrill is gone last weekend, 15 minutes from the car.
  15. here's a good video showing the ragini route, or the new standard way up the mountain. Tunneling through those mushrooms looks wild! I wonder how well those "wings" worked. [video:youtube]
  16. I'm very skeptical of anything greek. I researched this thing "alpha lambda delta" literally all it means is you got a 3.5 your first semester. I figure anyplace that won't hire me based on me not being a member of that society is a place I do not want to work in. Most frats I've visited out here have been bizarre, girls dancing on table tops and shit like that, cool if you're in a strip club but really weird when you end up sitting next to them in bio 256. "hey, you're that slut who stripped in front of like 35 frat guys and then got gangbanged behind the bar, nice". When stuff like that is going down and the guys in the house don't really have much of a problem with it I start to shy away and try and distance myself as far as I can. I'm not a feminist by any means but I do have some respect for those of the opposite gender. As in I don't just view them as things to put my dick in, which seems to be the general view of the frat guys around here.
  17. just let me know when you're coming out, I'll do my best to keep up with ya!
  18. dane I hope the hammer came through in the mail alright. good to hear that you're doing so well and still are stoked on getting out. met some "old" guy today who was killing it and couldn't help but think of you. keep crushing buddy and stay healthy.
  19. thanks for your comprehensive and well composed reply mtguide, if only I could come up with stuff like that for the papers I have to write here in school. Yeah I kinda figured as much, I try and be as polite and friendly as possible, climbing with him today was alright. managed to float my way up a really fun bolted mixed route that he outright refused to get on again. Messed around on TR on this burly M7-8 which was tons of fun. the guy just won't even try it. And when I asked if I could run a lap on the ice line he was climbing he pulled the rope down. I'm trying my best but it's hard to not just sock him in the face haha. like I can't imagine doing that to anyone. Did some mixed with my buddy from north carolina, he was hesitant to start but once he reached to top the grin on his face was priceless. It's stuff like that that keeps me climbing.
  20. realized this was more of a counseling center question, so moving it over here. Lately here in MT I've noticed that kids from the NE and I do not really get along. I don't know what it is but apparently my public school background makes me inferior and my suggestions seem to insight passive aggressive storms of silence. Tomorrow I'm going up to try good looking one, a M6 WI5, one of the best pitches in the canyon. I asked a kid who just bought a brand new set of 2nd gen fusions if he'd like to TR it after me and he immediately acted offended that I would even offer. He replied with a pretentious hurumpf "I don't want to waste my picks or scratch up my tools". The same guy outright refused a toperope on thrill is gone, how can you hate something without even trying it? every interaction we have involves him having to prove me wrong in some way, or "gain the upper hand", no matter how trivial the topic. Some other NEasters became noticeably concerned and aloof when I mentioned that I wasn't planning on joining this greek honor society for college freshman. costs $100 to get in and all it means is you got above a 3.5 GPA the first semester of school. over one million members nationally, if you want to pay money to get your name on a meaningless list good for you but I'll pass. I didn't say any of that though, just said I wasn't doing it. Utter silence and pure judgement. how do I respond to shit like that? am I an asshole? what can I do? btw everyone I know from the south are all easygoing mellow people, seems to be exclusively a new england thing.
  21. I'm already a baws at rok climbin. since it's so easy for me I'm gonna take up a sport in the wintertime that entails whacking oneself in the head with hammers. maybe with the permanent brain damage I'm sure to receive rock climbing can be a challenge to me again.
  22. wayne your climb is cool too.
  23. strawberry fields forever. hot damn that route looks like a blast.
