You see what happens when you take away everyone's guns? YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS???

You can't tell in the photo, but Obama is actually shooting somebody in the face. It's an initiation thing.

Only 6 states require background checks for private sales I wonder why so many conservatives are spending so much energy defending the rights of convicted felons and the mentally ill to buy weapons underneath freeway overpasses?

Sounds good to me. Do you also support measures to make it easier to enforce those existing laws, for example mandatory background checks? Or do you think there is a good reason to allow gun sales under overpasses, no questions asked? I imagine you'd also support a proper registry of gun ownership, to catch people selling them illegally. Right? Or at least, you'd propose your own solution for keeping guns out of the wrong hands? I've asked you before for your solution but you've never answered me. Only a criminal would be against these things, yes? Also, you keep mentioning "making guns illegal" but nobody is actually proposing that, so I'm not sure why you're outraged about a conflict that doesn't even exist. Your right to own guns is not in danger, only a bombast would make such a claim -- with the exception of the proposed assault rifle and high-capacity magazine ban, which is a legitimate gripe imo. If the NRA were a savvy political organization that was looking out for you rather than the corporate gun lobby, they would embrace background checks and systems to prevent the illegal and irresponsible ownership of guns -- I bet they could receive concessions on the "assault rifle" issue in exchange for that organizations support of rational gun reform, but unfortunately the NRA has positioned itself on the extreme end of the topic and has completely lost legitimacy, as far as I'm concerned. Insisting that my viewpoint is just the result of an irrational fear of an inanimate object? That's just childish. Of course, you've already demonstrated that you are completely unwilling to compromise your (in my view) extreme stance on gun control, so I'm sure this entire missive will be completely lost on you. Cheers, though!

Yeah, that's the guy. He occasionally still pops up on here.

My biggest climbing influences have all been people I knew -- climbing partners, mentors (miss you, dan ) and acquaintances. I'll never forget sitting at the belay below givler's crack and seeing Layton come soloing up next to me looking for a route, cigarette in mouth. Or seeing pictures of Ivan's alpine cape on dragontail during a thunder and hail storm. Or watching Tvash change his shoes half-way up a slab with no pro in. Or cutting a stuck rope off-route on cutthroat with Dan, or that time we tried to climb Ptarmigan in winter during a powder storm (what were we thinking and why didnt we just go skiing?) Maybe I'm simple, but stuff like that has had a much longer lasting impression on me than any of the climbing celebrities and attention-seekers like Twight, et al. And I suppose it sounds corny, but I'd rather read cc.com than books on climbing written by guys I don't even know.

Of course you "tuned out" on that story. THEY are the bad guys - WE aren't like THEM! LOLZ You know, I've been thinking about this all day, that maybe republicans and democrats really did have equal amounts of crazies in their party. I tried to imagine it, and look at it from the other side. But you know, I was raised in a super conservative family and actually was quite conservative myself until my early twenties or so. Looking back, I remember being constantly embarrassed by the actions of other conservative-type people around me. Sure, they were always fringe, but they were always there, and loud, and embarrassing. I was constantly making excuses for them, or reconciling my own beliefs somehow -- total cognitive dissonance shit all the time. The shit going on now with the NRA and the republican party's continual resistance to civilized gun control legislation, the party's stance against climate change and the grass-roots anti-intellectualism of the tea-party? The party's stance against gay rights? I dunno, man, it's pretty bad. I don't think it's equal, at all. I would be super embarrassed.

If the republicans were winning elections, they'd have "no problems at all" with the EC 'course, a popular vote won't help them there, either. So, might as well try redistricting!
