In July I soloed Mt Shasta. My pack wt. was about 28-30lbs including 2, 1 ltr. bottles of water. Most of the people I saw arriving at Hellen Lake (ele. 10,000) were carrying 45-50 lbs. and some carrying closer to 55-60- lbs. What are they carrying? I wonder at times if I am not equiped with the proper items. I don't feel that I've deprived myself of any expected comforts.

timy replied to frontrangeclimber's topic in The Gear Critic
what kind of sleeper are you hot or cold? winter early spring late fall I have a -20 western mountaineering down bag. it only weighs about 3-3.5 lbs if I get too warm I unzip. -
as of 4-17-06 re-opening is still under consideration as per ranger station.

WOW that was alota name callin and inflamitory statments. I agree with Mat if yer gonna call some one names put yer real name on the post. But then what do I know! The one thing I know the most of is nothing.

If your just looking for elevation gain and an excellent hike you might consider Mt. Adams as a back-up plan. Just so you know theres no such thing as Ice Worms that devoure people if they exist at all.If they do exist they would be larvea from some insect. (floaties, they make the melted snow and ice you drink taste better)

If yer lookin to guide someone I'll go with ya. I ain't got much expierience but I got me some fortitude and a hankerin to learn.

Well Dirty HAIRY, in responce to your statement that I have thin skin. I DO NOT believe I do. You see I was taught, that when some one has a sincere question it is to be answered in a sincere manner so as NOT to dicourage their participation in futher skills building. I have been in managment since I was 20 which was some years ago. Further more there is a time for fun and a time for jokes. I teach all of my manager trainees to respect the individual as we all have different life expieriences. Some like myself had no time early in life to learn these things from friends and peers so that leaves us as bait for the dogs so to speak. Soooo anyways thanks again to all who helped on my GPS question and if I have more in the future I will, thin skinned or not, probably ask those questions in the NEWBIES section. IF THATS ALRIGHT!!!!!
-
There are many good points made in the above rants and raves but one is missing that shouldn't be. Newbies, I believe are not treated in a manner that fosters enthusiasm in the mountaineering and climbing community. Case in point, I was recently FLAMED for asking a question about plotting GPS co-ordinates on a Green Trails Map. While the answer was, I learned, easy to figure out with the help of a gentelman in Canada!!! I was ridiculed for my question!!! There are probably manny who don't pursue this sport/hobby because they were not 1. able to find a mentor 2.asked questions and were made fun of for asking(stupid questions) 3.Both of the above made it impossible to gain more expierience even after they may or may not have taken some beginers course in Alpine Travel or Mountaineering. The point I'm trying to make is this. Most of the expierienced climbers and mountaineers don't want to be troubled by or slowed down by NEWBIES and so don't contribute to their endeavors. This in the long run will create LESS outdoors people and ultimatly a smaller voice for the wilderness we all seek to protect and enjoy. Soooo next time you are checking the newbies site REMEMBER you,we need each other and as THUMPER said if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything!!!!

flatlander thanks much for the info. I do have a 1-24000 usgs map of the area I am interested and can readily plot a gps position on it, but those green trail maps as you've stated are a bit odd and don't conform to any scale. I came to this site because ALL of the people I know including those at the local gear store and REI or its web site had as much info as I already had -0-. Once again thanks!!!!!
-
oh gee I THOUGHT this was a site where NEWBIES could come to get information on subjects they have yet to become skilled at. I had no idea this was the whipping post site!!!
-
the location does not change to map scale BUT without the right scale you cannot accurately post a position from a GPS unit onto the map. right? why else would they make a UTM card with 8 different scales?
-
green trails maps are 1-69500 scale with UTM grids on 2000 meter grids. The question is simple. On green tails maps what scale (on the UTM card)is used to plot gps co-ordinates, keeping in mind that a UTM card has no scale for maps set at 1-69500
