The Constance Range is a special place, that route sounds like a great way up the mountain. I too enjoyed the finger traverse, its a pretty wild position. Constance was my first solo climb, and it left a very memorable impression on me. Thanks for the tr, might find me up there next year!

I found evidence of ski0rs up at Hal Foss and Fricapa in their summit registers, I plan on making a trip there this spring. The hike in to Royal basin is chill, and then there is a HUGH area to explore on skiis. I wonder if Deception has seen a ski descent? hmmm

Yah, I went up to the summit of snoqualmie via cave ridge after taggin guy, then over to lundin and went up the W and down the E, then found my way up to Red mountain....Finding your way down from red mountain to the Commonwealth trail is really straight forward. ohh, and the W. ridge is so great on lundin...its short, but there is something about it that is really fun.

I did the traverse over the summer...its a little loose in spots but I had a good time. from Kaleetan I went down to the lake and over to Chair peak and back to the alpental parking lot. Here is a shot from Roosevelt.

[TR] Upper Lena to Mt. Stone Traverse- 9/4/2004
AJScott replied to bremerton_john's topic in Olympic Peninsula
nice work! How much do you travel on the bikes? My dad did this traverse back in the 70's and I have always wanted to get up there and check it out. congrats -
we did see a couple flags here and there just exaggerating... we were mainly off route from the dried up lake to the headwall that leads up to the upper meadow...when i was up there last year...I found it just fine (on my second attempt) and when I was up there with rod...nothing looked the same from the dried up lake...we didnt stay in the woods enough. ohh well...next time.
-
jeez, we hardly saw any flags. But I must admit, I have a lot of practice at staying off route. I usually get to where I am trying to go, but I have an amazing ability of taking the worst way possible. Some people have a built in compass...I have one that directs me towards wet gullies full of devilsclub, and hot exposed slopes filled with slide alder.

My father saved his cabin and gazebo. He had to sneak up the back side of the ridge, because he just had to check out how bad it was, and when he got there he noticed most of the burning was done, with several small fires burning around the cabin. He began yelling for help, and fire fighters came and helped him put out some small flames around the cabin. I am sure he will have some photos. I hope the fire damage is minimal.
-
If that picture was clear of smoke, you would be looking at my fathers property, which is along the left hand ridge, and even includes one of the pinnacles. We are loosing our cabin and gazebo. It fucking sucks, and there are no other words to describe it.

Drove up Friday night to the trail head, and met Adam. We woke up pretty early on Saturday and hiked up to Royal Basin Lake, and continued up to the upper basin, then continued and set up camp at the base of this minor peak of Deceptions ridge. We hiked to the top of it before nightfall to check stuff out. We encountered the best climbing of the trip on solid sandy colored rock that had a really pleasent texture. Too bad the Olympics doesnt have more of this stuff! Got a good view of the surroundings from there, and decided on a tentative plan for the next day. From camp we hiked up and over a minor peak, and over to Fricaba. Here is the view from there looking at Hal Foss and Mt. Mystery. Followed a ridge down and up to Hal Foss. From Foss we decended to the Glacier and connected with Route 3 for Mystery. You can toss moss, but Hal Foss is Choss Boss! Mystery went smoothly for how bad it looked like it was going to be. We got to the summit and the N. Peak looked higher so I went over and Climbed that as well, it is lower. If your up there, I would recommend the N. Summit, Its a great class 4 summit, on a nice summit block. Thats it in the lower left hand corner, with the main summit behind Adam. Made it down to the lake in time for a good swim before the sun went down. BEUTIFUL lake, and very warm. We made the hike from the lake in a single push for cold beers in the river. 3 of the Olympics big 7+'s!
