I look at the solos from a player's perspective, and yes, for me Metallica has some really good shit because it is memorable to listen to and fun to play. I prefer the melodic stuff to pure technical shredding. I agree on the Surfing with the Alien, although my favorite songs to play are "Crushing Day" and "Midnight". Midnight is simply a masterpiece.
