It sounds like you are between a rock and a hard place. Maybe you could try moving down there and working for a while and see if that works out or not. If not you could always quit and come back and there would be no harm (that I can think of)? The commuting thing for weekends would be tough (and expensive!) but it could be doable. Maybe you could arrange to work 4 days a week at 10-12 hours a day, and have 3 day weekends? Best wishes in this difficult time!

I hope a mentor can help me fullfil my lifelong dream and summit this mountain soon. You sound like a perfect candidate for the Mountaineers! problem is they want money. can you believe it? I need someone who can mentor me and maybe give me some gear... to borrow. this will fulfill my lifelong dream. oh, how I long to summit that hill.

For a beginner, probably best to climb Avy Gulch in the first couple weeks of June. In April or May, look at the ridge runs (Green, Sargents, etc). You should check out Whitney too, since you are in SoCal.

Sweet baby Jesus! That must have hurt. There's got to be more to that story. I take it that the cornea was reattached and eventually all was well with the eye? The previous day, I'd been cutting steel lath-reinforced stucco using a diamond cut off blade on a high speed grinder. I wore safety glasses. I surmise that the particle was lurking on my lower eye lid. When I rubbed the eye, the particle penetrated the cornea. that makes sense. kind of like the time I cut up some jalapeno peppers, washed my hands, and latter rubbed an eye... there was still juice on my finger.

I Had seen that I would have been hella pissed and attempted to help the dog. Owner be damned. I didn't see it myself... someone I talked with at the trailhead at the bottom told me about it. totally lame. the subject came up because there was other "interesting" stuff on the trail (i.e. a couple of spots where someone puked).
