I agree. Great route on a great peice of rock! Basically, 2 pitches up to the thumb notch, tag the thumb, then the long scramble off to really round off the alpine experience. Definitely worth doing, and a huge shout out to the folks who replaced the bolts!!!! Replaced bolts make these routes enjoyable, instead of a one time stunt that you survive, never to repeat again. Who did the replacement btw, seem like I read about it in Tylers bolt replacement thread a while back.

Plaidman and Rick have reported that there looks to be climable ice just off I-84 freeway between mile post 118 and 121, past The Dalles

Scott and Rick, thanks for taking me up there. This area is so awesome! The Steeple and Coethedral. Everyone has seen the pictures, have you ever seen anything like it. I have never been to Maple Canyon or Cochise Stronghond, but in photos they look quite a bit different than these areas. The knobs are course volcanic rock, very sticky. Super fun!! Great views from nice summit. Cool hike in with big trees. Scott, congrats on the route! Scott, Bill, and the many others who have made these areas happen, Thank You! Come on out folks! You will have a blast. How about a few more pics from Sunday, Scott? -

Skipped my lunch workout to read this, well worth it. Love the TR Ivan, had several great laughs while reading it. Congrats guys!!! Nothing quite like getting up El Capitan! -
Awesome route Tyler, real fun to climb. The 3rd pitch is amazing, slightly overhanging, many jugs, great rock. I would also like to thank you for your bolt replacement efforts. I was looking at a picture of hardware you replaced, must have been 100 bolt hangers. Would be real cool if you could replace the remaining 1/4" bolts on Barad Dur, lead bolts and anchors. Wolf Rock is so awesome! Must have been real fun putting up all those routes.

Check out El Cap Report for great photos and play by play of the effort. http://www.elcapreport.com/content/elcap-report-61712 -
I was lucky enough to spend a few days with David, getting rope-gunned around Yosemite. That is the only trip that I got to climb both Half Dome (reg route) and El Cap (west face) each in a day. He was a heck of a climber. Of course the part that impacts me now is how much I enjoyed his company. He was funny, kind, humble, mellow, relaxed yet motivated; a great guy to be stuck on a climbing trip with. For those of you who have not, check out his trip reports. Sheesh! What a Globetrotting Bad-Ass! I will miss you David. I will be one of the many.

Thanks guys. So is this a bad time to mention that I am looking for other parents to do some family climbing with. I am very open to going to non-rockfall prone areas.

OK, I was reminded that Beacon is not a great place to take kids, too much rock fall. But I did feel sheltered under the big roof. Hope to do more cragging this fall. Eli is showing a lot of promise with his climbing at the playground.

[TR] Yosylum - Da Kapitan - Poon-Tangerine Trip 7/4/2011
beaconben replied to ivan's topic in California
Almost all bolts and rivets are replaced with shiny new stuff. maybe that is old news, I am working with an old guidbook. Moving slower than your team of 3, that does not surprize me. I would never claim to be good at doing walls, I could only claim that I do climb one every once in a while. -

Thanks for the great trip reports Ivan. I'm psyched we got up the captain, and especially psyched you got up the captain, an ascent well deserved after your previous years attempts. I think Tangerine Trip was the hardest El Cap experience I have been thru because there are no ledges on the route. I think the aid climbing is easier than Zodiac, but not being able to stand on any sort of ledge for that many days, I found that to be kind of brutal. Just standing and sitting on that ledge one pitch from the top felt like such a luxury. Great trip Ivan!! -
Somebody on this site has to know snakes, please let us know. I do not think that is a rattlesnake.

Sheesh Kev, they are really kicking the crap out of you. I guess people are not interested in this topic. I like big wall climbing, or something like that. You will probably know if you do a wall cause it really puts the hurt on. Of course there seem to be plenty of badasses out there who would contradict that, doing two walls in a day and such. So just couse a route is more than 1000 feet, I am not sure that really qualifies. for instance, Royal Arches to me does not qualify as "big wall", while the much shorter Space Shot does. There are so many styles to climb walls in. I always encourage buddies to go for beginner walls in a day, like leaning tower or Moonlight Butress. But it seems like people doing some of their first walls have to go thru a bivi or two to feel like they have really have experienced big wall climbing.
