  3. Heard a rumour of a lost boarder found dead of exposure. Any News?
  4. 11 of the 74 pics that have people of them are of Don Serl. 8 pictures are credited to Dru.
  5. You gotta take some chances to get the good ones... With a job I used to have, I was always looking for cheap assistants, and working with new, unskilled people all the time. The job often involved week long road trips and long, physical hours. I got some idiots that I had to force to shut up, and never used twice, but I also found some very pleasant surprises, and made unusual life long friends that I would never have met without being patient and giving people a chance. In particular, I remember a young woman I didn't want to hire - confident as she was, I couldn't imagine a 21 year old girl being able to handle the job. She turned out to be the best assistant I ever had, sharp, hard working and laid back about grubby life on the road. She was super cute, but with a wicked, dirty sense of humor, and had been a tree planter. We had a great time, harassing military guys in bars, drinking beer and singing old country tunes while driving through the night, etc. I was flabbergasted when we checked into a hotel in Ft. St. John and she said she better stay in the van because she was banned from that hotel. She cleaned up REAL nice for the PR portion of the job too, all dirty jeans and hard work one minute, ponytail and sundress the next. I once asked her why she stayed with her weeny boyfriend, and she said that she met him tree-planting, and that any guy who would go down on you after 14 days without a shower was a keeper!! Man, I miss that girl! Anyway, I'm not sure if I had a point, the thread just got me thinking about Renee.
  6. I suppose I should clarify that was a joke. You only have to meet Adrian Burke, and see that cherubic, glowing smile once to realize what a nice guy he really is. Thanks for your efforts, Adrian!
  7. Here is Steve and Drew just before the ropes got stuck! There was a little snow at the base of the final pitches, and plenty of ice on everyone's clothing and gear. The quick releases on my Naja Cup leashes froze, so I had hard time manipulating gear. They're good tools other than that, though I admired the way Dru's quarks bit into the ice. That might have something to do with technique...
  8. That is funny! Was A. Burke one of them?
  9. That's a great pic of Steven, he looks totalled! Thanks for a fun day guys!

    Dry ropes

Well they took back that rope, and the moccasyms, both for full credit. So I got the Mammut 8.0mm 60 meter dry ropes! Yay MEC

  12. I was trying to be objective, but yeah, Dru's right. One guy I know says the McLane is for old fogeys, and 'select' is way more in tune with the times. Obviously some people like it, but then again some people think there's dodo birds in heaven...
  13. The Bourdon/Tasaka "Squamish select" guide has less routes and more details than the McLane. McLane's has more stuff and less detail, and must be supplemented with "Whistler Rockclimbs" to get the sport stuff north of Squamish.

    Dry ropes

I'm gonna try, I need a good rope setup. Any advice on the second issue? Buy one 50 meter genesis to go with my 47 meter genesis, or haul out the credit card for the dual 60 meter setup? As for returns to MEC...Several years back I was wearing vipers, and I exchanged them 3 times because the leather ripped. Turned out it was a known defect that la Sportiva was aware of, and exchanges were common. Might be the same deal with the rope. I've got a pair of moccasyms that are due for their first resole, and the leather is shot. I plan to take them, along with my old pair of moccasyms to show them 3 resoles and good leather, back for exchange. They sold me a waterproof rope, and it isn't, they might honor it.
  15. Or read that book "Bear Attacks." While there are some scary bits, it would probably help in the long run to understand the critter better. Plus there are several instances where men were attacked and killed the attacking bears by hand, a couple with knives and one with a rock!

    Dry ropes

No, not this one. I have put my mammut 10.5 through the wash a couple times, and it's still water resistant. My mammut 8.5 is still good too. Yeah, maybe I'll take the beal back. Here's another question then: I had to chop the end of my 8.5, and it is now about 47 meters long, but in good shape otherwise. should I use it with a 50 (primarily for ice,) or will that be a pain in the ass too often? Optimally I should get back to dual 60's I know, but $$$!
  17. Here's a quote from that astronomy site: There's the problem in a nut shell. A creationist cannot accept evolution because they think that man has or is representative of some sort of innate supremacy in regards to other life forms. This is a commonly held misconception of natural selection. Evolution itself is often held to be some sort of "hierarchic progression" when in fact it is best described by its latin roots - evolution is "unfolding." For any understanding of natural selection, one must look past the errant social connotations that most people seem to ascribe to it. As if that could happen...
  18. Sure!! The dodo went extinct because it was easy to catch and yummy. God put it on those islands to feed the people and give them a leg up so to speak, but then they angered him because they were sinners, so he took 'em away! Now they have a special place in God's Aviary in Heaven!!!
  19. My Beal stinger (9.4mm 70 meter) is supposed to have Super Dry capabilities. As I understand it, there are basically 2 ways that ropes are water resistant, with woven hydrophobic yarn or with chemical treatment. My 1 year old stinger has both apparently, as well as a chemically coated core. It soaks up water like a sponge, way more than my 7 year old 10.5 mammut. Should I return it to MEC with a "doesn't meet expectations" or try some of the Nik-wax type rope treatments. Has anyone tried to treat their ropes to increase water resistance? Any recommendations as to more water repellent ropes?
  20. having more fun by the minute!

  24. Been there. Put beans in dish towel, pound the shit out of em with your shoe. You won't get it very fine, so use lots, but it works ok in the end.
