My wife is due with our second in March and with the new Oregon law I have paid paternity leave for three months... ideally I'll get a little rock climbing in between changing diapers and taking care of the family before late July when I'm going to the Cirque of the Unclimbables for 2 weeks (my wife is so kind to put up with me, and my mother-in-law will come help out). After that I have no idea... maybe I'll get back into bouldering in the fall. There is plenty of easy access boulders near my house and it's easy with kids.
Congratulations!

What are they? I still need to bag Stone.
The recent ones in the Oly forums. Mt Stone is one of my favorites, but can’t take Kiba the last little bit because it’s Park. Been meaning to go up Skokomish for a while though. It’s in the Park too, but it’s just an one I haven’t been up yet.

What are your plans for 2024? Not looking to get details on your super secret project, but general details to get some psych going
This year I just want to get out and do more with my fur climbing partner. Since my vacation time is likely already spoken for (25th wedding anniversary, hunting in AK, canoe trip to Canada, week at the ocean), it will all have to be weekend warrior stuff.
1. Warrior with @JasonG
2. Repeats of my 2-3 favorite yearly Olympic hikes with variations
3. Exploring more in the Cascades. Dog friendly scrambles up peaks, to waterfalls, lakes, alpine.
4. Go further. I'm in better shape than I have been in a while, so I want to use it before its gone.

I would not want to be on the wrong side of a condensated fart.

We will do another soon. Thanks to @Toast for making this one happen even if your sick ass didn’t show up.

Have you guys hiked up to Twin Falls in winter? No trekking poles. No traction just boots. An alder branch. Until you have done this you are all just my sons and daughters. And I love you.

Who can make it?
I'll try to get up there with my jolly bag of CC.com stickers. If you're in West Seattle maybe we can car pool.

Anyway I think I even bought that book (Gravity's Rainbow) because of the username...but I haven't read it yet.

Yoooo @olyclimber, it's me, the reincarnation of slothrop. I lost access to the email address I used for cc.com... would be happy to have that account back, as regrettable as the choice of username is to me now. Please DM me if that's possible, I can tell you what the old email was.
Hi y'all
Came back a few weeks ago and took a nostalgia trip through the whole "Hardest Mox" saga and damn that was the good stuff. Was glad to see cc.com is still going hard to this day with weird stream of consciousness trip reports and random spraying.
sent you an email!

This is an incredibly delayed response but I believe that "breaker bar" is actually a mining drill bit meant to be hit with a sledge. I've found several stashes in the Pasayten that have that same hexagonal/octagonal shape.
Yep agree. I was just watching a youtube channel this past weekend and they were exploring an old gold mine down in California. It was a huge adit, with passage ways going everywhere. They found a ton of that old steel left in the mine that looked exactly like that, and you could see the business end of them where they were pretty used up. I think you could also hook them onto a machine driven by a compressor or something? Or at least the mine in the Youtube vid had one.

Absolutely epic. What an accomplishment. What a TR. next level.

If LaSportiva don't fit your feet I think these are equal to the TX4s. I picked up a pair last year when in Austria because the mountaineering boots I had brought were tearing up my feet (not sure why I had tons of miles in them already), so I used the Scarpas on my hut hike and they are really nice. I don't know if it was just a Euro thing, but the version i bought are a sweet teal color:

They are so comfy I've taken to just wearing them as every day shoes.

I've spent over 50 yrs in the backcountry with my packhorses mostly Northern British Columbia and in all that time have had only two encounters with grizzly that were not good. Although ive encountered many bears over the year with no issue i wasnt so lucky on these occasions. Lost a couple of horses in one encounter and was attacked in the other fortunately i wasn't seriously hurt.
Damn never would pass up hearing more about either or both encounters…

Ok let’s do strangest or most startling animal encounters

I am a huge fan of CalTopo personally.
Same. I used/still use Gaia GPS for a long time but they were bought and now my photos no longer sync from my phone with the free version. I really like the typos on CalTopo, now my go to when researching an area.
