From comments I've heard in all my travels pretty much anywhere, ever, nobody anywhere thinks much of the French. Hell, even the French don't like the other French - North, South, East, West, they all look down their noses at les autres. The only thing they can all get together on is their universal hatred of Parisiennes.

Whatever it takes to put a [insert your party affiliation here] in the White House next year.

I'm not absolving her of any and all responsibility: she jumped, no question, but I think the guy who walked her out onto the bridge and then urged her to jump should take some of the heat, too. I've been out on a similar bridge myself, and I've had to drag my brother kicking and screaming back off another one. In both cases there were people trying to help, and there were other people laughing and jeering and chanting "JUMP!! JUMP!! JUMP!!" Those people made choices too, and just once I'd like to see some of them held to account.

Yeah, when she was "on" she was great. If I was someone close to her, right now I'd be trying to track down that SOB ex-husband who got her into the drugs and then bailed on her... Can't say for sure what I'd do when I found him, but I don't imagine it would be pleasant.

Hey, remember how this turned out to be true? That was pretty "funny", too, wasn't it?

I was hoping she'd pull herself together, but I guess not...

The forecasters are pathologically incapable of forecasting anything but rain, especially for weekends. Even when they're predicting nice weather, they still put that stupid raincloud icon on the forecast. You have to read between the lines of the text forecast to figure out what they're actually saying. And most of the time, what they're saying is that it might rain on the Tantalus Range and Mt Garibaldi and the Mamquam Group, but if you're climbing in and around Squamish it will probably be just fine. People who are here have been able to do quite a bit of climbing this year, because they just get up in the morning and see that it's cloudy and cool and dry so they go climbing. People who make their plans based on the forecast have all stayed home or gone elsewhere, which means the people who are here have had fewer crowds to contend with and have been able to take their pick of the climbs. That's not to say that it hasn't rained - it has, just not nearly as much as the forecast would have people believe. In short, the weather has regularly been better than the forecast. Will it be climb-able during your visit? Your guess is as good as mine. Will it be as lousy as the forecast makes it appear? Probably not.

are you looking at Lenin-corpse spank material again, Prole? No, the New York Times ... So to support your thesis that "the post-WWII consumer capitalist order is done" you cite an article that talks about a massive population of new consumer-capitalists emerging in Russia, China and India? Pretty funny-sounding death rattle, that.

You're welcome - glad you're enjoying it. Meanwhile, in other theological news: Pasta strainer qualifies as "religious headgear"

So, how about forming a volunteer's union? That way, they wouldn't be able to complain about "non-union volunteers" doing maintenance work. The newly unionized volunteers could immediately go on strike until they secure a collective agreement guaranteeing their right to work for free. Once that agreement was in place, the Teamsters would have to support them because of all that "solidarity forever" business, right?

Starting? No disrespect to Mister Farrar, but Cav has been at the top of the game for a few years now. Just to clarify, the comment you're replying to was from 2009

I'm as happy as anyone to see my birthplace regaining its team, but the whole Jets story is just a sideshow - the real mission for hockey fans is to get rid of Gary Bettman.

1) Yes 2) Yes 3) Hell yes - my first trips in the Rockies, around the Bowrons, and in to the Cathedrals were taken with Trapper Nelsons. I still have a couple of them, and many fond memories associated with them (mostly fond memories of camping with Dad, and various childhood friends. The packs themselves not so much) My collection originally belonged to Dad and/or grandfather, so way more sentimental value than anything else...

...and then some. RIP Spirit. Well done.

...which means wind power makes more sense here than a lot of other places. All those water reservoirs act as pretty good storage batteries - when the wind is blowing you can use the resulting power to run things, and retain the water that otherwise would have been discharged through the turbines, so the generating capacity of that water is still available when the wind dies down. They're both quick-on / quick-off power sources that complement one another quite well. Trick is to find similar similarly complementary pairs of power sources for those areas that don't have access to hydro - no mean feat for some places.

Naahhh... you haven't lost him. He might not be running for president, but you'll always have The Donald.

Cool, but shouldn't the comet's tail be pointed directly away from the sun, regardless of the comet's direction of travel? The dust trail would track along with the direction of the comet, but it would be quite faint. That bright tail we see in the image must be the ablated gases and other material being blown off the nucleus by the solar wind, in which case it should be pointing directly away... ? I'm no astrophysicist, so maybe someone can 'splain that to me?

Looking over that list, there's an awful lot of what could be termed "routine maintenance" amendments. But major structural amendments - the original bill of rights, abolition of slavery, enfranchisement of women, term limits for presidents - are comparatively rare. How'd the ERA fare? Imagine how difficult it would be - in the context of the present discussion - to amend the constitution to abolish the electoral college, re-structure both houses of congress, and institute a system of proportional representation for all three elected branches. Simple, right? I mean, after your most recent amendment regarding "compensation of members of congress" it would be a cakewalk by comparison, wouldn't it? My point was, and remains, that we haven't adapted our electoral system to better reflect the diversity of views in a multi-party environment because, well, because it's damned near impossible to do it.

hey adultfriendfinder avatar - maybe you should get back to the Stephen Harper pedophile lounge? Harper's a pedophile? Damn - good thing that news didn't leak before the polls closed or it would have further galvanized his base and given him a bigger majority.
