This is not related to you, High On Rock, but it reminds me of a direction sprot-climbing can take one without due diligence: Sport-climbing is such a quick-fix. One is not required to take the time to assemble appropriate protection, scope stances to place said gear, etc. You see the phenomenon at Smith constantly: someone runs up to a route, throws down a rope and jumps on route with hardly a glance upward. This quick-fix mentality damages the climbing ethos, as well as (through lack of learned observation/process skills) the climbing areas and surrounding environment. We've all seen the trashed sport-climbing crag in our lives ( at least the older among us ). Again, this is no reflection on High_On_Rock, except it's only 4 pages, not 8 (yet) sickie

Is that an ether/or question? OK, I am going to bed now.

You guys are just baggin' on a Offsome compliment...

By those standards, style seems the domain of the accepting? [font:Comic Sans MS]Someone here ain't got no style!

Pope said: Your myopic vision yet again ignores that this is not possible for face or arete climbs without natural protection. But I am finding the discussion healthy.

Excellent post, GTG. If anything, as a traditional climber, wouldn't bolted routes (as at Smith) keep the trad lines less crowded? Where is the celebration of that boon?

Sure thing Bud! I just figured out tonight there IS room for a guest on the floor, even your lanky ass! Plus, contrary to Chaoda Boy's belief, I built in an extra 6 inches on the side of the twin (stuffed with clothing) to make a double. 8D

OK, SC. Point taken. I was only trying to say that knee-jerk malignment of a "new" way decreases the effectiveness of ANY given point. Thanks for a good observation. Erik

I think that RedNose is pretty damn entertaining...

Kix won't be happy about this.

Better than spray? Only if your sensibilities tend towards the archival! Certainly better quality! Thanks for the link. sickie

One is certainly more centered in one's perspectives if one finds single-mindedness in an achievement rather than malignment.

Some people just can never accept change, preferring to hold onto their outdated idealisms. Change is inevitable, you can either accept it or become embittered by it. The choice Pope has made is clear.

Nothing out there is insulated, unless you get into the high-end RV's. I can vouch for the man-hours involved in the process. Not cost-effective. That is why I started from scratch. Hell, I had a 20K Eurovan Camper and...no insulation. Therein lies the crux: buy a mini-van, tear out and replace the finish to install insulation, or start from scratch.

You were out there, Man Derek and Yabo rank up there too. Discuss?

Pat responses, however imaged, do nothing for me. Carry on.

Those that cannot learn from history are destined to repeat it: VIETNAM BTW, I would like to see just ONE intelligent response from KB to bolster his image.

MiniVans will not accomodate weight well, if you are going to be packing gear, people. It's the equivalent of a 1971 VW Bus fully loaded: slow for you, very hard on the engine. Cargo vans are the next step up. Commercially, the Chevy Vortech engines are the best thing going, but other options I pursued over tha last 3 months are: Mercedes Cargo Van (very rare) Ford diesel (5.9 liter, I think, but still ~20-22 MPG, and they call it the 500,000 mile engine). Price is escalated for the diesels by 2-3000 dollars. The Park and Sell was inflexible and not invested in their clientel, in my experience. I went through an established local dealership, as I could not find them on private party listings ( but I AM in Bellingham. Hope my research helps! sickie E

I feel like a pariah in my home town. In all my 18 years of travelling, living and climbing, never have I met a tougher town than Bellingham. Not that I am the most socially effervescent person, but, Damn. 4 years and not a single regular climbing partner.

Thanks for the nice comments. I have about 150 hours and 3K into it, but it will be my home when I move to FLAGSTAFF in February, via Bishop, JTree, Moab... :moondance:

I was thinking more along the lines of "Ralph's Dry Cleaning"... Oly, I worked as a yacht carpenter for a year, and learned all the tricks.

Take one 2001 GMC 1-ton extended-cab Savana: Add Insulation: [/img]http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/plab/data/500/medium/van_Conversion_Resize_07.jpg[/img] Add flooring (casino carpeting): Lots of room, even with a mud-space in the back: Water tank and electric (1000-W full-sine inverter with 2 6-volt golf cart batteries in series). Battery box is vented: Stealth Settings: Cabinetry and panelling. The maple is from a 60-foot tree I had milled off my property, the panelling is birch, and I matched the stain for the maple to the panels. The yellow rosettes in the green carpet pick up the maple color nicely. Folding futon/sofa system with rear gear drawer: Everything took a coat of stain and 2-3 coats of spar urethane: Low profile roof-vent: The stereo/TV/VCR st-up and the stow-away-table: Part two to follow. :brew:E BTW, the new photo loading and linking F'IN
