  5. Instructor experience ranges from two to twenty... as said before, less-experienced instructors are paired with more-experienced. Mounties don't learn gear anchors right away. They learn girth-hitching a tree and that's about it. Beginners sport-climbing is a relatively new thing in the mountaineering community as a whole... the last twenty years at the most? Being able to climb 5.X at the gym is about the least important thing there is for general mountaineering. But knowing how to tie a figure 8, belay, and rappel isn't. The gym can be a valuable tool. Besides, if they spent a few sessions in the gym they might actually be able to climb the tooth; I saw one mountie chick get stuck on the second pitch for half an hour.

I also started climbing to get away from pathetic losers. Then I realized my mistake. I'm sticking to hiking from now on.

  8. Go slog up a volcano. I heard Oregon has some good ones. Don't stay in WA, the climbing sucks here.

But difficulty does play a role. Oh, fuck, why do we care. If you're a climber, you'll know.

I started climbing because I thought I could impress my buddies with it. Turns out I was right.

I'd say you're a climber if you love the sport, and stick to it for a significant amount of time. There are quite a few very, very good climber who only get out once every two weeks or so.

  18. So you're saying that the media are attention whores grovelling in the dirt? Yes, I agree. And Clinton was a sleazy bastard who got was he deserved? Yes, I agree. Bush is a tool? I disagree. I'd say he's a very poor speaker, but I agree with some of his decisions. Overall, though, politicians, including shrub, are sleazebags. Now crawl back into your little hole.
  19. Quit squealing!
  20. porker porker!!!! SprayShaw, don't you have a job to go to or something?
  21. Good point. It's the best response to your post.
  22. So what is your point? The Basic Course is not a climbing class, it is a mountaineering course with all that entails: fitness, route finding and navigation, equipment, weather resources, roped travel, crevasse rescue, etc. It is up to the students to become good climbers on their own. The mountaineers just give them the tools to be safe. Catbirdseat, you gotta crawl before you can run. You can't teach everything at the same time. Don't try to teach navigation, belaying, pro placement, rope mangement, and fitness on the same climb. Start by learning the ropes at a crag, gain fitness by hiking, learn orientation in the city park for starters, etc.
