  1. Yah, here's a solution-- move to India! listings for jobs in India
  2. Comparison of a human hand and an orangutan hand: "Take a look at that Orangutan's hand. It has obnoxiously long fingers. It'd be even more obvious from a different angle, but their fingers are just horrendously huge. It evolved that way so that they could swing around in the trees better. Longer fingers wrap around a branch more effectively. And, of course, their thumbs are very, very tiny, because they would just get in the way during swinging." "This brings up of one of the traits you probably take for granted every day -- the precision grip. Specifically speaking, the human precision grip is the ability to touch the tip of your thumb to the tips of your fingers at the midpont of your hand (that's about 1 inch directly outward from the center of your palm). It allows you to write with a pencil, eat with a fork, play Operation, and a whole range of other fine motor tasks." "Orangutans can't do this (nor can any other primate), because their fingers are too long, and their thumbs are too short. They can sort of do it, but not with nearly enough force for it to be effective. It's a very recently evolved trait in our lineage. In fact, many believe that this ability, along with (or perhaps in concert with) increased intelligence, is one of the reasons why we are so successful as a species." -- source
  3. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe says US, UK and Spain are involved in the plot by mercenaries believed to have been sent to aid in the overthrow of the government of Equatorial Guinea. The plan was to replace the current president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasog, with Severo Moto who heads a government-in-exile in Madrid, Spain. Zimbabwe detained a Boeing 727 which carried the mercenaries after its owners made a false declaration of its cargo and crew. "Spain denied involvement in any plot in the former Spanish colony and a diplomatic source said the Spanish ambassador in Harare would "present a formal complaint to the Zimbabwean government" tomorrow over its allegation."
  4. Ya know CBS, I don't feel contempt for the woman as much as pity. According to her attorney the woman has a long history of mental illness. Though it's certainly appalling that the woman didn't use legal birth control (e.g., the Pill, etc.) What I find interesting is the following: "Critics of the charges say the case could affect abortion rights and open the door to the prosecution of mothers who smoke, fail to follow their obstetrician's diet or take some other action that endangers a fetus." I think there have been a least one other case where a drug addicted mother was charged with child endangerment. One would hope that in today's world with education a pregnant mother would not abuse her fetus with drugs and other harmful activities. Seems it's a continuum of varying degree, e.g., what about the mother that overfeeds her child so he becomes obese? Isn't there nutritional information widely available that alerts people to the potential dangers of obesity? And, how would you have it? Let the government regulate reproduction?

  8. Hey, while we're at it let's just open the floodgates to constitutional amendments. First off, allow foreign-born Americans to run for the office of President. Second, allow the Presidential incumbent to run for a third or subsequent administrations. Third,...
  9. It’s a bit simplistic isn’t it? Similar to condensing Republican thought to one word: greed. If things were as simple as this parable then we’d all be in one party. Besides, you could modify the story to reflect current happenings under the Bush administration where special interests, e.g., Halliburton, are skimming resources from both students (us), say, a college bookstore that charges a high markup for required school supplies. Or maybe, add a bit about a Physics department that is allotted an inordinate amount of money over other departments for pursuing pie-in-the-sky projects. In principle, yes, I’d have to agree that the story depicts a picture of fundamental unfairness, but again, things are not as simple as that. You’d have to be a political simpleton to decide your allegiance based on this story. Somewhere I read that political thought is a late development in most people’s experience. It requires an experiential understanding of the world coupled with higher thought to formulate a worldview, of how it is and how it should be. Anyone using less than that to cast a vote along a party line is being a mindless automaton subjected to the whims of the current political winds that are blowing.

  15. I'm not trying to help Erf here but require some clarification. There are exceptions where a soldier cannot be persecuted for failure to obey if the order is unlawful. Are there other specific circumstances that cause the complete submission to this oath to be invalid such as conflict between the Constitution and the standing government?
