Along these lines, I nominate the Pope. A paradigm shift within the Catholic church towards birthcontrol would be simply........HUGE! The first nation in the world to attain zero population growth was Italy. Furthermore, catholic population is quite low compared to other world religions. Hmm, Erock, I don't know where you get your stats, but I wasn't aware of any country with zero growth over a time period in excess of a year. While Italy is certainly mostly Catholic, the Catholic religion extends far beyond Italy. Italy is also western Europe where to the chagrin of the Pope, they are willing to use birth contol anyway. Still, the majority of Catholics as a whole do not use birthcontrol. You must look south to Mexico, Central and South America for the evidence. I'm not picking on Catholics exlusively. In the US, i think the Mormons are worse than the Catholics as far as procreation goes. Still if you could choose one person who has extensive control over an issue, the pope is pretty darn powerful. I'm not aware of other religions that have one single person who could affect so many people. From Original CIA Data Growth Italy -.01 ( I said the FIRST, not the longest standing) U.S. .85% Chile 1.23% Brazil 1.16% Panama 1.53% Mexico 1.73% Peru 1.93% Though these numbers seem high compared to U.S. growth rates they are typical for global population growth rates, i.e. near the mean. The highest population growth rates (greater than 3%) are in places like Africa, and the Middle East. Many of these nations are predominantly Muslim. Population of Latin America 500 million Population of Latin America in 2025 (projected) 650 Million Contrast this with: Population South Cental Asia 1.5 Billion Projected 2025 2+ Billion Simple solutions to complex problems do not work. Some fo the world's slowest population growth rates are in Catholic nations (Ireland, Spain, Italy). This alone suggests that education and proper planned parenthood funding are more significant than the influence of any single person. Perhaps if the pope changed his mind about birth control, world population growth would slow, but not very significantly. As for the Mormons, they comprise a TINY fraction of world population, they could have 100% growth rate and the only place it would be noticeable is in Utah. Hmmm...seems that raising the standard of living exerts economic pressure to keep the average rate of childbirth low. The birth rate of economically developed countries is fairly low. It's inevitable, the standard of living will increase in highly populated countries such as China and India. These countries are already seeing the economic benefits as labor shifts offshore to these countries. A rising standard of living should act as a self-regulating population check. Europe, the United States, and Japan have already provided a bellwether of this phenomenon. Seems the sooner we can convert to clean energy, the less overall impact to the environment will occur.

Dr. Lief Salford, of Lund University in Sweden, who has called the evolution of wireless phones 'the largest biological experiment in the history of the world,' reported in June that cell phone radiation damaged neurons in the brains of young rats. The study showed cells in the parts of rats' brains that control sensation, memory and movement died after being exposed to various cell phones at different levels of radiation for two hours. 'The situation of the growing brain might deserve special concern, since biological and maturational processes are particularly vulnerable,' Salford said. He cautioned that it is possible that after decades of daily use a whole generation of users may suffer negative effects as early as middle age. The paper was published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a U.S. National Institutes of Health journal. Feds to launch $10 million investigation of cell phones, wireless technologies

Yeah, sheer size of population and continued growth. But I believe that an energy-intensive standard of living is more influential. If we didn't have modern medicine and other benefits of our standard of living then population would be self-regulating. Our standard of living requires an enormous amount of energy to produce and transport goods, etc. And with each consumer innovation, the use of energy increases, e.g., look at the additional consumer electronic goods you use compared to thirty years ago. There was an economist named Dr. Julian Simon formerly of Univ. of Maryland, who won a famous bet with Dr. Paul Ehrich concerning population growth and the state of the world. I tend to side with Simon with regard to future state of the world and population size if we develop technology to help solve the problems. Case in point: the Green Revolution in agriculture--development of hardy strains of wheat helped feed the millions who were predicted to perish in third world countries. So, yeah, the proper expansion of the use of technology guided by the foresight of politicians, research scientists, academicians, etc. Ok, so that's utopian but I think we can increase carrying capacity through wiser use of water resources, development of new food products, etc. Plus, a country with a high growth rate fostered by a young population is an economic boon. Some have said that overcrowding leads to violence and deviant social behavior. As far as extrapolating social effects from rat behavior due to crowding, I don't believe that the study is definitive. Just like the story about the lemmings, it could turn out to be wrong or just not applicable to humans. Humans are very adaptable. Maybe impose some control over population growth through family planning programs but overall do not impose draconian measures on other people's reproductive freedom. So, controlled growth and expanded use of technology to meet the world's needs. The technological application of science will include the use of alterative energy.

"Clearly, this shift away from an oil-based industry will have huge ramifications—politically as well as environmentally. Energy is the world’s biggest business, generating nearly 2 trillion dollars a year, and the way we use energy now is the single most destructive thing we do to our planet. The key to sustainable development lies in the clean use of energy and POWER TO THE PEOPLE shows us how today’s energy revolution promises just that." "He cuts through the rhetoric of the right and the left and finds the ideas he believes will really work—such as free markets working together with environmental goals—and profiles quirky and visionary players from all sides. The planet-saving ideas he reports on are far from idealists' whims. They are supported by the likes of Ford, GE, Motorola, Shell Oil, BP, the US Army, and Presidents Bush and Clinton, as well as environmentalists." Power to the People: How the Coming Energy Revolution Will Transform an Industry, Change Our Lives, and Maybe Save the Planet BTW, any of you read Jeremy Rifkin's stuff? I thought his shit was revolutionary at the time.

Gore would have been faced with a recession and loss of jobs, 911, Middle East, trade disputes with EU, etc. Personally (and this is the view I had during Reagan admin, though I didn't necessarily agree with their actions), it doesn't matter so much how many scandals etc. occur during the admin. but what the admin can do in the time they're in power, in other words, how effective is the administration? I want to see action, even if the opposite direction I'd like to see it move, because I know there's usually a self-correcting mechanism in the works. A swing to the right is nearly always followed by a swing to the left.

solution: cell phone jammer

Gore would have had a handful of problems too.

Maybe it's just the climber chicks I know, but I tend to think of a women's climbing group as about as neccessary as a women's weightlifting support group. These are not shy, helpless women by any means. It's a front.

Sanskrit 'kund' or 'kunt' meaning a spring, well, fount or basin of water consecrated to some holy purpose or person, and carrying also the meanings for pitcher, or pot, is essentially the same word as Old English 'kunte', better known as cunt.

A hot body is great. But the 'tude, that's what's hot.

I'd take a woman who likes to climb and who doesn' mind getting grungy doing it.

Coven. That sounds evil. Hey, I just found out some information that might be useful to someone: the kind green "The active chemical in marijuana can do more for your head than give you a high -- it could protect your brain in emergency situations." "When the brain is injured in a fall or car accident, the damage does not stop after the impact. When cells in the brain die, they send signals to nearby cells to die also, causing continued, uncontrollable injury. Researchers have been trying to find a way to stop this domino effect for decades, but nothing has worked well yet." "Researchers at Pharmos, a pharmaceutical company in Iselin, New Jersey, are seeing promising results with their injectable synthetic cannabis drug. While pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer and Bayer have failed at developing emergency treatments for head trauma, Pharmos scientists say theirs will be the one to succeed."

Do you have a DVD driver? I think it has to decode the info so an ordinary CD drive (and driver) is not good enough.

Someone posted a thread awhile back complaining about coworkers who left cell phones lying around only to have the phones ring and irritate her. Not sure how effective this gadget is, but here's the link "This cell phone jammer looks just like a cell phone and is ideal for use when commuting on the bus and train or when eating in restaurants etc, anywhere where you need effective control at close quarters!" "Make sure you have this phone jammer with you whenever you are out and about as you never know when you are going to need to use it. With this cell phone jammer switched on in your pocket you will be able to silence those anti-social types who insist on using their mobile phones in the most indiscrete way, the beauty is that they will not know it is you that has switched them off!, all they will see is that their signal has dropped on their phone. When you have had your meal or enjoyed your coffee in peace and quiet, you can then switch off your phone jammer and continue on your way completely stress free."
