Jon brings up some interesting points, as does Will. One of our ongoing goals has been to keep this place ad-free, and i personally enjoy using a site that doesn't have pop ups, or little cars buzzing across the screen. Anyhow, i really don't mind donating the time/$ to the site b/c i see alot of great things come out of it, and I'm constantly amused by things like imorris's freshiez .jpg. But I do think we need to have something in place to make sure the site stays up. Keep the ideas coming...

email bombis probably someone who tried to do a denial of service attack on the site by flooding it with emails.

IMHO, I would avoid camping in the valley. Perhaps i'm just one who enjoys somewhat of an outdoors feel, even try to grab some solitude (I know both of which are almost imposible in yose), but staying in the valley, regardless of if its at Curry, IV, or any of the other car campgrounds, its like you have gone to a disneyland outdoor theme park. Crane flat, just at the top of the valley on the Hodgdon Meadow entrance side is a bit more removed from the throngs of tourists, and the motorcades of german tourists in rental RV's. The car camp ground up there has just a bit more of a "camping" feel to it, and is close to some of the parks other gems (groves of big ass trees) that will give the non climbers in the party some other options to do. Also, crane is at the junction for the turn off to Tuolomne, so you are camped at a good spot to hop off to either area.

this stuff is the shizzo yizzo! http://www.maptech.com retail: $150 Maptech terrain navigator allows you to plot out your super hardcore alpine assaults on your PC whilst you spray away on cc.com. Seriously though, this is a set of 20 cd that include all the USGS quads in all of Washington and Oregon. You can plot courses on the maps, do the altitude calculations, and download the waypoints into your GPS to reference during your trip, it is very powerful. The software also includes enhanced elevation data that allows you to kick the topo's into 3D mode, to view the terrain as if you were actually there. The set also includes bonus cd's for Mt. Rainier, Olympic, and Crater Lake National Parks. Maps support UTM and lat/long overlays. Latest 2002 version, gotta go quick, save cash on buying topos before each trip. All this and a commerative bronzed bud found in the muir hut for only $100!

thanks for all the input, specially Mike, what a guy! I realize that the trail won't provide me with endless amounts of solitude, but its just one of those 'classics' that I feel a need to do. I faxed in my reservation request this morning so we'll see what happens. I like the idea of skipping the south end of the trail... i suppose that is in a way cheating, but we'll see how things work out. one other question for mike... when you have your permit, are rangers pretty strict for one sticking to the planned itinerary? say if I decided to turbo hike one day, skip a camp and stay at another for 2 nites or something. I know grand canyon basically cuts off one's balls if you do something like that, but know the policies differ from park to park. thanks again y'alls for the hiker beta. TIMMY

so i'm going to have 2 weeks off in the 2nd half of july, no work, no dogs, no wife, i'm pretty stoaked. I've always wanted to hike the wonderland trail or possibly hike all around Olympic NP (either Norht South, or East West or both) I'm wondering if any of the fine folks here have done the wonderland and might have suggestions. thanks Tim
