I haven't heard squat from anyone on Rainier in a very long time. How many weeks? Weather has been bad with never more than one or two days without snow. You'll be very lucky to get decent weather or snow conditions for your trip.

It's not the 3% death rate that makes SARS so threatening, but the prospect of high infection rates. If it is truly as infectious as a cold, more people could get it in a year than ever contract flu. People typically get flu once every five years, however they might get a cold about twice a year. If that is any indication, then SARS is ten times more infectious. Of course there are many many different viruses that cause cold symptoms, so any one virus is not infecting the entire population.

We should do all the things we are told to do to avoid colds. That is excercise, get enough sleep, stop smoking, good nutrition, etc. There is a treatment for colds called peconaril, but it is only effective against picornaviruses and enteroviruses. I don't thing it will work on coronaviruses. I have found zinc lozenges to be effective to reduce the duration and symptoms of colds. Perhaps not all would agree, but that is my belief. Some studies have said yea, whilst others have said nay.

Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (SARS) is apparently caused by new variant of the corona virus, which a major cause of the common cold. Clearly it is very contagious and spreads just like any other cold. It is only just a matter of time before everyone in this country is exposed to it. I expect to get the disease within a few months, and so will all of you. I sincerely hope we all survive it. With luck, climbers who tend to be in good physical condition will pull through. The flu of 1917-18 however seemed to be indiscriminate in who it felled. Even the young and strong succumbed. I hope it is not like that.

Toast, Here is a handy force calculator for you. Calculate Fall Force. Note the Impact Force for a 9.8 mm Maxim rope is 10.5 kN, a 10.5 mm is 9.43, and a 11 mm is 9.62 kN. This is surprising. I would think that the smaller the rope the lower the Impact Force would be. Using this calculator, if I (weight 195 lbs) were to climb 10 ft above my anchor and then placed one piece of pro and then fell 5 feet, my fall factor would be 0.5. If I were using the 9.8 mm Maxim rope the force on my pro would be 10.5 kN, which is enough to pull out most nuts and even bust some hexes. Therefore you want your first pieces to be really bomber, or else place them close together (or just don't fall).

I don't believe that conservatism can ever be reconciled with conservation of natural resources. The two are diametrically opposed. Natural resources and the environment are the common possession of all the people. Conservatism is all about all power and wealth going to the individual according to how hard he works (or else bribes, steals or cheats). To a conservative, anything owned in common is something which simply has not yet been claimed by an individual (or corporation). To a conservative, there is nothing more important than the immediate accumulation of wealth, and that includes the preservation of common resources for future generations. Much of conservative philosophy comes from Christianity which preaches that resources were placed on earth by God for the explict purpose to be exploited by man (interpreted as whichever man gets there first).
