  1. A #4 Tech Friend is equivalent to a #3.5 Old Camalot or a little smaller than a New Camalot. The new Camalots have less overlap than the old ones.
  2. Safety and mode of ascent aren't necessarily exclusive of each other, but the first should take precedence over the second. It takes experience to develop good style.
  3. I read in the paper this morning that the Senate is working on a bill to address the recommendations of the 9-11 Commision. The only problem is that provisions of the bill appear to go beyond even what the Commision suggested in giving new powers to the FBI and the CIA to spy on people electronically. Now's the time to speak up people. If you value your freedom, you'd better write your senator or congressman.
  4. Tom and Pete were great buddies. Tom told me last year that Pete had multiple myeloma. They continued to do things together in the outdoors as long as they could.
  5. Reposting something from klenke in the Pub Club thread (of all places):
  6. Yes and Yes. The impact of DUSEL on the Icicle has been vasty exaggerated, in my opinion. I believe climbers can continue to have a quality experience there even if DUSEL is built.
  7. Glad you had a good experience.
  8. No use for technology ay? No one ever tells their doctor to spare the technology when it comes to saving their lives. People are funny that way. "We don't need no edukayshun. We don't need no thot kontrol..."
  9. I hope Dubya loses by one vote. Why isn't this in Spray?
  10. Ben you should take the time to read up on the subject as I have and you will see some of the problems they are facing. Basically, if we don't get this lab built, many of our best and brightest scientists will leave the country so they can continue their work. Canada is already ahead of the US because of their Sudbury facility.
  11. No, what did you take?
  12. I belive that Snoboy was actually the first to foist this upon us.
  13. We had a planned bivy on Stuart this year, except that we didn't, or at least I didn't plan on it being as cold as it was. I had a super light 40 degree down bag and a bivy sack which was fine except that the temperature fell to 20 degrees in the night. I stayed warm by moving around a lot, but I didn't get any long periods of ininterrupted sleep. I had plenty of food which was a huge bonus. Every time I ate a snack I could feel the warmth.
  14. You are all a bunch of relativists. Is there a single person here who would obey the law just because it is the Law and not just because you happen to agree with it or because you don't feel you can get away with breaking it?
  15. What makes you so sure they didn't air the story knowing full well the documents were fakes? By retracting the claim of authenticity, they were able to make it an even bigger story than it otherwise would be. The attention on Bush's Guard record goes on and on, longer than if the smoking gun actually existed.
  16. We were a bunch of 6-8 year olds sitting around the campfire with our dads and we were being obnoxious. Finally they said, "go make your own fire". So one of the kids took a flaming brand and we started out own little camp fire several yards away. One of the kids got a little too enthusiastic and put so much wood on he extinguishing the fire. Another kid ran off saying, "I know how to get it going again". He came back with a styrofoam cup. I said, "what's in the cup". He said, as he was pouring it on the fire, "gasoline". WHOOSH! A wall of flame shot up right next to my face. It was a miracle nobody got burnt.
  17. There is plenty of legal precedent for regarding the mineral rights below a property as separate from the surface of the land and the air rights too for that matter.
  18. Mattp has told me to run madly backwards if I fall on slabs. Somehow I have managed to avoid falling on slabs, but most certainly the time will come.
  19. These sort of things happen with kids. You can be the best parent and stuff still happens. When I was a kid my brother and I were in the Y-Indian Guides with my Dad. We went on a camping trip to Doheny State Beach down near San Juan Capistrano. We were all walking near an estuary that had these nice, rounded rocks, perfect for throwing. Some kid tossed a fist-sized rock and hit my brother in the head, opening up a good sized gash. The kid didn't mean to throw it at my brother. His aim was off. So what is it with boys and sticks anyway? When my son was two years old, we were walking and he found a stick, picked it up and started waving it around. No one needed to teach him that. My daughter never got into sticks like that. The affinity for sticks must be hard-wired in boys.
  20. Sounds like Seven Virgins and a Mule at Sunshine Wall, or else Shady Chimney.
  21. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Consider posting to the Frenchman's Coulee Yahoo! group (FrenchmanCouleeClimbers@yahoogroups.com).
  22. Welcome to cc.com. A number of us climb at SG. See you there.
  23. Lame. Works better with bears.
  24. Polyethylene has better chemical resistance than nylon. Getting anything to stick would be the biggest problem. If in doubt, just use electrical tape to mark your slings.
  25. Either that or arrange for him to "misplace" his knife.
