OK, 99% certain of the May 1 weekend... Friday to Sunday as usual. It's going to be soon... start planning! I have not encountered this either in person or reading. I would suspect frequency drift in the F1. Do they show up as OK if you do a group check with the Pulse? There are standards for send and receive, and I would be suprised if a new Pulse would be out of spec. One issue that I am aware of with the F1 vs Pulses or other marking beacons (S1, DSP) is that the continous carrier transmission of the F1 (and perhaps other analog beacons) can cause ghosting or slow down discrimination of the number of burials. How long did you give it to "find" the other signal?

The Eneloops also seem to be quite durable getting knocked around in your pack etc. I have been very happy with the ones I have. They are also available as Sony CycleEnergy - if they say made in Japan, and have a white ring around the positive end then it's apparently a rebadged Eneloop. The Eneloops also are capable of sustaining a high current draw which is important for todays high performance LEDs. The Energizer NiMH batteries tend to be junk IME. They advertise super high capacity, but tend to only deliver that if you use them fresh out of the charger. Leave them for a couple days and they are half drained.

Guardians of the Peaks - Mountain Rescue in the Canadian Rockies and Columbia Mountains, Calvert & Portman A fairly recent book that talks about the history and development of the mountain rescue teams and methods in Canada. As a SAR member this is fascinating stuff, but it is a good book and would probably interest a lot of climbers. Instructional: FOTH Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain, Tremper No BS, very detailed, something for the beginner to the pro. I read chunks of it every year around this time. It has ideas that really expanded my thinking about risk and safety in the mountains. Extreme Alpinism, Mark Twight Learn about alpine climbing at a level that most of will never achieve, and pick up a few good tips along the way... Basic Rockcraft, Royal Robbins Good for a little history... should be taken along with a dose of Downward Bound or any of Tami Knight's fine literature in order to preserve balance in the world.

I dunno, that set of Leeper Z's is probably worth a small fortune, I'd say it looks like a retirement plan to me!

Little update: Spent the last 3 days working in an underground creek on a contract. Neither of my 2 lamps got any water in the battery compartment, or the light head. They were never dunked, but they were subject to splashes and high humidity along with temperature swings. The light has good throw, not a lot of spill, but on low or medium works fine for walking. Really good for spotting things at a distance, and decent light colour. I reccomend so far. I don't know of a better light for $75. Already more impressed than with the PT Apex.

I had a Princeton Tec Apex, and it was the best headlamp I'd ever owned... until it broke. The warranty department fixed me up pretty quick with a new battery case, then another part broke. Kind of a fragile light IMO. So, I haunted the caving & CandlePower forums for a while, and heard talk of a new headlamp coming - the Fenix HP10, it sounded good, but the delivery date kept getting delayed. Finally it shipped, and I ordered one for a friend, and one for me. Once I got a close look at it, I ordered a second one for myself, since I have an underground access job next week in a wet tunnel, and need a reliable backup. Thoughts? -It seems brighter than the Apex, but more of a spot beam. -The light head is nice and small. I can get two units on my Petzl Ecrin Roc if need be (like next week) especially if I use the Petzl headlamp clips as in the picture and mount the other one above it. -I would like a colour other than black so it is easier to find. -The UI is good, it remembers what brightness you were at when you utrned it off, and the blinky modes are not part of the regular scrolling through, although still easy to get to if you want to host a b/c disco party. -Other people's reviews indicate awesome runtime, and good waterproofness. Got mine in Canada from Fenixtactical . Seems to be reliable and both orders were shipped quickly.

Feet sound reasonably similar to mine except my arch is not particularly high. I have been happy in Sportiva Nepal Tops, Gramont hikers, Scarpa T1s, Salomon X-Waves, and Dynafit Zzeros. The latter 2 have required some punching.

Can you give us a bit more to work on? Are they wide up front, wide all along, Really W I D E ?? I have a fairly wide forefoot and am happy in my Dynafit Zzeros, with a bt of punching. Check out the boot reviews on Wildsnow.com
