it seems like most specialists agree that the technology is not up to par; yet, we are still going ahead with electronic voting the issue of no paper record is very disturbing. isn't there a long history of election tampering?
-
good question. i just entered ~15 randomly chosen names in google and could not find a single earth/climate scientist.

http://www.ucsusa.org/global_environment/global_warming/page.cfm?pageID=499 Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine The Marshall Institute co-sponsored with the OISM a deceptive campaign -- known as the Petition Project -- to undermine and discredit the scientific authority of the IPCC and to oppose the Kyoto Protocol. Early in the spring of 1998, thousands of scientists around the country received a mass mailing urging them to sign a petition calling on the government to reject the Kyoto Protocol. The petition was accompanied by other pieces including an article formatted to mimic the journal of the National Academy of Sciences. Subsequent research revealed that the article had not been peer-reviewed, nor published, nor even accepted for publication in that journal and the Academy released a strong statement disclaiming any connection to this effort and reaffirming the reality of climate change. The Petition resurfaced in 2001. Spin: There is no scientific basis for claims about global warming. IPCC is a hoax. Kyoto is flawed. Funding: Petition was funded by private sources. Affiliated Individuals: Arthur B. Robinson, Sallie L. Baliunas, Frederick Seitz George Marshall Institute [ http://www.marshall.org ] This conservative think tank shifted its focus from Star Wars to climate change in the late 1980s. In 1989, the Marshall Institute released a report claiming that "cyclical variations in the intensity of the sun would offset any climate change associated with elevated greenhouse gases." Though refuted by the IPCC, the report was very influential in influencing the Bush Sr. Administration s climate change policy. The Marshall Institute has since published numerous reports downplaying the severity of global climate change. Spin: Blame the Sun. The Kyoto Protocol is fatally flawed. Affiliated Individuals: Sallie Baliunas, an astrophysicist from Harvard; and Frederick Seitz.

go figure. if you were there you'd notice the big burly fence between you and the camera ... you are about to fall flat on your face and plow into said fence.
-
not only that, but in the big scheme of things work results in further entropy than no work would.
-
well, thank you. i had no idea i was so much in touch with my feminine side. i just wish my wife agreed with you. i don't use avatars. ask the mods. hey mods, am i marylou? moreover, i thought marylou did not climb. i have provided a fair amount of 'beta' on some routes.
-
didn't arnold say it was all a joke when confronted with his abuse of women? did you read the piece by the way? i thought it was excellent.
-
do not be mistaken, i value courage. but to me the one who lacks courage invariably runs away when facing a good argument. or alternatively hides behind posturing and insults.
-
did you know women don't wear one when the bleeding stops. some things are not due to hazard
-
you are stacking the odds by preventing those who want more than 'humor' from participating. those humorous threads have been around forever, it does not mean that abuse does not take place the rest of the time. just ask marylou whether she thinks what is hurled her way is humor. get a grip.

Dude, it's actually obvious to anyone who pays attention that Trask is just a bullshitter looking to crack wise and not take himself or anything else too seriously. The more seriously you take Trask's antics, the less seriously he's going to take you, resulting in some seriously unserious antics being dumped on you in quantity. Could be a lesson in there somewhere ... i understand that it is the way most of you see him. as i have said before, any interpretation of reality has to be born by facts. and the facts show that most progressive posters who stick to their guns are eventually showered with insults and ridicule, and these threads soon turn to a joke where no 'discussion' takes place. could be a lesson in there somewhere .... to some people trask is anything but a 'fun guy'
-
at the very least will is not dependable, entropy is.

what you call whining, i call fighting back by exposing trask's tactics. it is obvious to anyone who pays attention that trask wants to disrupt any discussion he does not approve of. i tried to ignore him for many month but it did not work because he and his avatars/buddies/mob gang up and scare people away. this results in the dissenting poster being isolated and the discussion effectively shut down by lack of reasonable participants (the other result is that normal people don't want to be seen in such company and never pass the stage of lurking). i don't seek trask, trask comes to me. my sense of dignity in these exchanges comes from not caving in to bullies and/or resorting to cheap demeaning discourse (ok once in a while i can't resist taking a stab and it's not cheap either). whenever i post something controversial, it is to ellicit discussion not insults. why should an internet board be so different that it fosters abnormal interaction between people. again, gratuitous strings of expletives both prevent exchange of ideas and participation by the greatest number (how many people do you know enjoy being insulted ad-infinitum). my mentioning of trask's tactics (which you call whining, kind of like the standard characterization of dissenters these days btw, probably in hope of inciting shame for 'not being a man') is to remind participants (and board owners) that a choice eventually has to be made: either abusive behavior is condoned and people end up only abusing each other, or discussion is encouraged and respect of others is the general rule. i am not arguing for absurd pc style posting, i don't mind swear words, jokes, or even harsh words when people feel strongly about something but spray should be for more than trading insults and inane banter. if some individuals want to trade insults all day long, they can have their own threads for all i care.

i remember reading a few month ago that some of it is on tape.

i believe (if reading the description right) i have done the first and last pitch of this. although we did go through the overhanging section on the first pitch. i have posted details of the remaining pitches in a previous thread. anyhow, it sounds like a great climb

just see it as an experiment in pavlovian conditioning (somewhat tongue in cheek) http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/dl/free/0072490462/27748/kle90462_ch03.pdf "Fear also motivates an escape response to an aversive event. Neal Miller’s classic 1948 study demonstrates the motivational properties of fear. Miller first conditioned fear in rats by administering electric shock in the white compartment of a shuttle box apparatus (see Figure 3.2). After administering the shock, Miller allowed the rats to escape into the black compartment. After the initial pairings of the white compartment with shock, he confined the animals in the white compartment without presenting any additional shock. However, each rat could escape the white chamber by turning a wheel to open the door to the black compartment. Miller found that about half of the rats learned to turn the wheel to escape the aversive white chamber; the other half “froze” and did not learn the required response. The results show that the association of an environment (the white chamber) with an unconditioned aversive event (shock) can cause the environment to acquire motivational properties."

it'd probably be quicker to discuss when trask is not trolling than the opposite. anyhow what difference does it make to respond here or there since we can be certain of trask making stupid 'comments' whatever the thread or context? no matter what version of reality we want to impress on others, facts always underscore any meaningful interpretation.

also, this was what 30 years ago? fuck! er, no. some of the documented stories (on a british tv show set) are as recent as 2000.

yet another one of our heroes hiding behind another avatar ...

What's so depressing about red meat, raw porn, and hard liquor? Sounds like a reasonably fulfilling and well-focused existence. I've said this before j_b; I'm more close to you politically, but you suck j_b ah! yes, of course. i forgot: the "good old boys" always stick together.

What's so depressing about red meat, raw porn, and hard liquor? Sounds like a reasonably fulfilling and well-focused existence. there is nothing depressing about them per se (or at least, when consumed in moderation). however, shoving them in everyone's face month after month, and combining them with utmost intolerance and disrespect (dare i say, hate) for other lifestyles is a reality i do no wish to share for it is truly depressing.
-
what is truly depressing is your reality, which comes out through your posts.
