Try visualizing the context as being totally local and face to face. You know them. They know you. Your kids go to the same school, wives talk at the grocery store, etc. Would we be willing to publicly display a blatantly disrespectful cartoon to our neighbors who are Muslim? Probably not. Would they threaten to kill us if we did? Probably not. But here we are in a global society linked by unprecidented communications capabilities. I was up on the ice about 2 miles up Commonweath today. It is deteriorating but still in. I kicked through in two spots and there is a big chunk in the center that has fallen.

Sounds like a troll but....Islam forbids the making of images of any living thing. Not even a cat. The Persians incorporated Islam into their religion(s) and so you will see images of people, horses etc in Persian art. But the rest of Islam will not attempt to "immitate Allah's creative powers". That was why enlightened Taliban officials had the 800 year old stone carvings of Buddah destroyed.

I was up the Commonwealth basin today. 2" wet on top of hard breakable crust with 1' soft snow beneath that. It was cooling off when I left and snowing hard off and on. Might drop another couple inches tonight at that rate. Pretty un fun skiing.

Welcome jabbers. I am from MT also. It is an easy transition once you figure out where all the good climbing is. I'm old, decrepid, married, applying for "The Biggest Loser" etc so you can't live here. But I know of another Climber Montana transplant in his twenties who might know something useful.

The info is only as useful as the gps is precise. After 911 the gps sattellites were scaled back for public use and gps coordinates were marginal at best. I use the gps to mark endpoints on traverses and crevasse edges. The difference between getting three sattellites and two means being off by 20-50 meters instead of 1 to 9. Nothing ever came of it as the weather held both times my gps was affected. The gps in the car is a different application. It takes your coordinates, plots them on a map and then give you instructions based on your beginning, end, and current locations. The amount od data processing is way higher and so, more prone to error. Safe enough for in town travel imo but not in the mountains.
