  10. As Homer Simpson would say "mmmm, climbing." I love most things about climbing. I have a low tolerance for what is enjoyable, i.e. it may be a long scree slog but those I enjoy almost as much a the "ideal" climb. I just plain enjoy getting out there and seeing/doing. But high on the list are the following: Having a beautiful sunrise all to yourself on the summit, and then later passing the hoards on their way up and saying "yeh, I saw that" to the question of whether you saw that sunrise they viewed from the parking lot. Having a mountain goat step out 15' or so away while your taking break on a solo climb of one of those "scree slogs". Turning around on a climb you've been wanting to do because your getting clobbered by ice fall, having the weather turn shitty, and getting down in near white-out conditions...and knowing you can come back another day because everyone is safe. 14. Shit!
  15. A while back, like a year-and-a-half (or more), there was a link to a climbing site that had all kinds of video clips as well as photo's. The climbing area was on these cliffs along the ocean (in South America I think...but don't hold me to that) and the guys climbing would free solo, a fall would dump them in the water. Anyway, there was a route that I believe was called "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", that had an incredible dyno; about a 5-6 foot lunge on an overhanging wall. There was also an awesome song that played along with the video of this route. Most the routes they were climbing were in the .12c to .14b range. If you remember this site could you post the address. I've done several searches and about all I can come up with is some movie called "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", this is complicating my search . Craig

    THE FEAR

Same thing happened to Lynn Hill on a .12c (or something like that) only she did lean back...lead to a 90' fall. Luckily she landed in a tree/shrub and the damage, though severe, was lessened. Craig

    THE FEAR

Was this the radio call the kids picked up 20 miles (or so) away on their walkie-talkies?

    THE FEAR

Oh my God that would suck!! Although its probably better than finding the bag filled with that "natural rock-colored" chalk.
  20. Funny...and only a little disturbing.
  21. Almost gave up on it, glad I didn't. VERY MUCH WORTH IT. FUNNY
  22. So what's the worst/most UNrealistic/blooper climbing action you've ever seen in a movie. 1) The Eiger Sanction-good movie but filled with questionable stuff: When their climbing that pillar and Clint is leading talking to his buddy (below him) and the rope goes UP and back down, mmmmm I wonder who set up that top rope? 2) Then they get to the top and he asks "so are you going to keep talking or bring me up?" So he goes into the whole hip belay but when they show the climber he's using ascenders on a fixed line. 3) Vertical Limit: (the whole movie) but especially the brother who goes from lower elevation to near the summit of K2 in a couple of days....and still has tons of energy to burn. I guess the whole acclimatizing thing is just overrated!! Craig

    THE FEAR

I agree that the scariest things for me are watching someone do something stupid or watching someone get so scared they freeze up. My wife doesn't climb and says she doesn't think she could watch me climb (I imagine this is the same thing). I've been scared a couple of times but the real fear seemed to come after the danger was over. Last weekend on Monkey Face West Face Variation; the second pitch, I climbed third and the second cleaned ALL THE GEAR including the gear at the point where the route turns hard left. This meant when I got to the crux (only 5.8, but hey, I'm new) I was looking up the crack.....and then waaaaay over to the left at the rope....mmmmm.....pendulum???? Just as I felt my fingers slipping and my foot slipping (shorts thouroghly filled) I just made the moves and got through it. I felt good about it because EVERY time I've had that feeling I have fallen, this time I got through it and I feel like I've taken another step toward becoming a better climber. Craig
  24. Sounds like a fun time. Any word as to the menu Craig
  25. Old_Man, you are correct about the headwall and I agree it's more of the upper part of the South Klickitat, but all the route descriptions I've seen call it the Mazama Headwall....go figure! Anywho, it was a fun climb. I've heard (but not seen) about an inscription at Pikers Peak that says something like "You are a piker if you think this is the summit, do not grumble for the mountain was here first." Next time I'm there I think I'll look for it. Craig
