  11. Ooops, er I searched cc.com but musta missed that thread . Thanks, it does have a lot of what I'm looking for.
  12. Well now that does open up possibilities, doesnt it?
  13. Hmmm, you wouldn't sandbag a guy, would'ja? I have perhaps three dozen gear leads under my belt and I'm taking it slow.
  14. I'm taking my rope & rack to Squamish - never been there before. I've been scouring the guidebook for quality 5.7-and-under routes and to my surprise it looks like there is plenty enough there to keep me busy for a three-day weekend. Hoping to camp at the Chief. I have the car-camping stuff sitting in a pile ready to go. If that place is full then, er, well I dont have a backup plan really. Any suggestions re routes and camping and... well, whatever would be much appreciated. Doxey
  15. Yikes! Uh, yeah, I'd say so
  16. From the Learning From My Mistakes Department: Okay, kinda telling on myself here It was May, many years ago. I was teaching ice axe skills at Alpental. We've all seen the rocks littered on Lower International and I kept my team low on the slope, out of the deposition zone. After ice axe arrest practice we went for a "climb", heading for Upper International. Denny Mountain was about to teach me a lesson. At about 2 in the afternoon we were hiking up Lower Intl below the cliffs. Suddenly, a loud report - something like CRACK - was followed by rock and ice careening toward my team. Everyone danced and dodged, and somehow no-one got hit. The one that really stays with me is the rock, approximately the size and shape of a car tire, spinning violently on end, accelerating as it passed between members of my team. It was sickening. Little ol' Denny Mountain swatted my butt and sent me home with my tail between my legs.

    Pub Club?

I got a (club) meeting, but maybe afterwards.
  18. Oh man, this is really bad....bad bad bad. I just cannot imagine what the families and The Mountaineers club is going through. Ho boy, really bad.
  19. My plans never really developed so its looks like I can go on Sunday (but not Saturday). Would like Icicle granite and can lead 5.7ish. Forecast is looking pretty good. Sunday?
  20. Yay! Glad you made it safe and sound.
  21. On Friday my pal Seth and I visited the Bathtub Dome area of Icicle Canyon. Neither of us had been there before. Not the best for a novice trad leader, but a great place for a beginner. Seth is no beginner, but he also enjoyed it. I am still a beginner, having a couple dozen trad leads under my belt, and I thought it was just right. The hike up from the car takes about 45 minutes. Boots are better than sneakers here. I led a one-pitch bolted number called Dave's Arete. Dave has a nice little arete - a great warmup with bolt anchors at the top. Then we climbed New Fixtures - 5.7. Yeah, really good for a developing trad leader. Takes gear just fine, lots of stuff to hang onto, and just spicy enough so you know you're really doing something. On the second pitch there's a really cool part where you're standing on this little tower, you sink a great hand jam, and step across to the main rock - fun stuff. If you are, like me, relatively new to leading on gear, visit Bathtub Dome Go get it!
  22. Hey Peter! Yeah, it was great to meet you guys at Perfect Pass. Good job!
  23. Photos by my friend Carla. Tres amigas - (l-r) Katie, Carla, Laurie. Carla assisted the Bushwhacker glacier climbing course I taught last year, and Katie and Laurie are graduates of that course. Katie watches me wring out my socks - yuck! Composite pano of Luna cirque Descending Challenger summit area. Near-whiteout with a chilly wind and garbage snow made it not as friendly as I had expected.
  24. Good for you! Sounds like a great climb. Dox
