Thanks for the link MM. How people could think that is a shark is beyond me. Curved dorsal fin, pointed snout, horizontal tail flukes. But of course some people think dolphins are a fish.

Wow, I'm impressed by the snappy comebacks and maturity on this thread!

'Iceman' Grabs Shark to Save Men Oct 24, 9:59 am ET STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - An Icelandic fishing captain, known as "the Iceman" for his tough character, grabbed a 660-pound shark with his bare hands as it swam in shallow water toward his crew, a witness said Thursday. The skipper of the trawler "Erik the Red" was on a beach in Kuummiit, east Greenland, watching his crew processing a catch when he saw the shark swimming toward the fish blood and guts -- and his men. Captain Sigurdur Petursson, known to locals as "the Iceman," ran into the shallow water and grabbed the shark by its tail. He dragged it off to dry land and killed it with his knife. "He caught it just with his hands. There was a lot of blood in the sea and the shark came in and he thought it was dangerous," Frede Kilime, a hunter and fisherman who watched from the beach, told Reuters by phone from Greenland. Icelandic author and journalist Reynir Traustason, who knows the trawler captain, said the act was typical of the man. "He's called 'the Iceman' because he isn't scared of anything," he said. "I know the people in that part of the world. They are really tough."

I guess it's time for me to jump in. I am a high school teacher. Most of the posts have some validity, some more than others. I took a big cut in pay to teach. Do I wish I made more? Sure, but it did allow me more time with my family. I do not care for the union, but I guessed I whimmped out and joined to keep them off my back at first. I wouldn't get the dues money anyway. It now lets me annoy them and be a pain in the ass to them and slowly affect some change. Not as much as I'd like. There are good teachers and bad ones. I see teachers racing kids out of the parking lot and others who spend untold amounts of time to help kids. I have seen this as a colleague and as a parent. In the private sector I saw the same thing in the work force. Parental involvement is a big determinant in the success of students. I teach an advanced freshman science class and on back to school night the room is full of these the parents for these classes. For my low level classes there were 4 parents. Kids in both classes come from all socio-economic levels. We teach what is to be valued by our kids not only by what we say but also by what we do. Enough for now.

I can sympathize. It took alot of explaining about courses I took to get my credential. I also worked with a person who had credentials in 2 states and a masters degree and the state of CA felt that wasn't enough and she needed to take a couple of more classes to get a CA credential.

Damn, I've been teaching it all wrong. I tell the young 'uns light stays the same speed, time slows down. It's that spaghettification thing that gets them though.

FWIW, a little while back here in wacky CA, our outgoing Gov signed legislation to allow illegal immigrants the right to obtain a drivers license. We also have the motor votor law where you register to vote at the DMV. To register all you need are a social security card and answer the question, "are you a resident of the U.S.?" Potential for voter fraud here? You tell me. Hipanics generally vote democratic. Well except in the recall. The Dems pushed this through at a time when thay have the majority but see the tide changing.

He may not be implying that things will be fine this time at all. But it is interesting how history has a tendency to repeat itself. That may be why the pundits have been quick to latch onto the Vietnam similarities. Here is a different type of similarity to think about.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply Johnston was stupid, far from it. In my question I gave three options and tried to give an example of each. Johnston's was an unfortunate accident. Who knew the mountain would blow sideways. With Treadwell I think the odds caught up with him. Same for the Krafts. They helped increase our knowledge of volcanoes but took some big, and I think unnecessary, risks. The guy who thought yoga or whatever would keep him safe from sharks was just plain stupid. I also agree with trask, you made your bed and now you must sleep in it.
