Wow! Great responses. They pretty much break down into two distinct classes: 1 – One class (J-B, Jopa and CBS) pretty much claims that the people of America are fools. This class of responders has somehow risen above the deception! 2 – The other (Jim) attacks the messenger (By the way I have never listen to the Rush Limbough Radio show ever!) These two classes reveal something very deep in the psyche of the “American Liberal” – a contempt for the common man (this contempt can get pretty close to ultimately hating democracy itself ) and the left’s determination to devolve political discourse into personal attacks. Something I read today: The liberal concern about inequality is not widely shared in the United States. Three scholars from Harvard and the London School of Economics recently analyzed attitudes toward inequality in Europe and here. In Europe, surveys have found that inequality of wealth makes two groups unhappy: rich leftists and the poor. By contrast, only rich leftists are troubled by inequality in the United States. The three professors argue that the poor in the U.S. are not concerned about inequality of wealth because they expect to rise up the income ladder whereas Europeans feel stuck in their assigned status in society. Americans do not resent the rich; Americans want and expect to be like them thanks to social mobility. The American Dream lives on except for wealthy progressives."

From the NYT business section (Saturdays) Headline: "A Shortage of Seasonal Workers Is Feared." They managed to frame a good jobs outlook in negative terms -- fear. On the same front page is a chart showing the spectacular recent performance of stock markets throughout the Middle East. Wouldn't this be a nice thing to read about in the general coverage of the Middle East?

Let's talk employment and the election. One thing is certain, the vested interests (which includes both political party establishments) have no interest in raising issues that might awaken the U.S. working class from the deep sleep into which it has fallen and thus invite the class struggle from below. Hence every effort will be made by the powers that be to ensure that the real nature of the employment problem in our country continues to be swept under the rug. The job debate that is building up in the context of the jobless recovery and current election fight is thus likely to be kept within very narrow limits by representatives of both parties. The Democrats will blame it on the Bush administration. The Bush administration will project huge employment increases in the future arising from its tax cuts—coming into play after an enormous lag. Our responsibility in these circumstances is clear: to reject all such opportunistic responses and to connect these problems to their root causes and to the evolution of the structural crisis.

Egads you guys crack me up...J_B at this point is saying in essence isn't it ironic that PP is right! By the way Will the schedule I have been referencing is effective not marginal and includes taxes other than FIT.

J_B - You are of course simply being silly again but anyway... In 2001 estimates for total spending on education in the US were approx. $700 billion. I wonder how you would include GI bill expense related to education. A defered defense expense? Would you expense the cost in the years earned?

of course i insist on considering what happened to the tax rate of the upper 1% that earns a full 1/3 of all income in america today. anyone with a little math sense and/or honesty would realize that a) 1/3 of all income is not cherry-picking and b)ignoring the taxation history of 1/3 of the national income while concluding that the tax system is more progressive is a flawed exercise. to me it is pretty clear you have no idea what you are looking at; but of course, in true form, this does not prevent you from drawing self-serving conclusions. Self serving conclusions? Heck I even posted some projections from JEC on periods after 2001 that seem to show a different trend. Self serving ? NO.

By the way, if we can create an enviroment where to rich get so rich that the trend on the attached table increases to close to100%, I'd be happy as hell - even if their effective tax rate was less than mine!

Pretty simple stuff you are correct, however, what I have suggested is that during the time period for which the CBO analysis covered there is not a lessening of progressivity in the federal tax structure. Thus your claim that if earlier periods are included the trand might be different is true. I agree. One can pick several time periods within the 79-01 period and come to different conclusions. I used all the data available in the recent CBO report. Honest and straightforward. You insist on comparing the top 1% to the quintiles however that is probably not a valid comparison. As a math guy you should know that. But then again there you go cherry picking. PP By the way I think I posted this before but here it is again. JEC Link

ya ya ya your putting me to sleep J_B.. Actually I graphed all the Quintiles in my first gragh today and in my last graph I graph the top 10% 5% and 1%. Clearly since you dont understand what you are looking at your argument must be most likely wrong and if correct, it is correct only by sheer luck. I'd love to read your stuff but I have found a better place to hang out..... .... the better place! Cheers! PP EDIT: I added the quintile graph agian to help you out! Notice four lines with a negative slope and one with a positive one. The positive one is for the highest quintile.

In the 1970’s phone piracy was an issue for the phone companies. One thing that surprised them was that those who were caught making free calls almost always had significantly higher than average phone bills. (I seem to remember the over $100/mos number)
