  4. iain, were you up there?
  5. yes, many do however at the time of their climb I think avy conditions were minimal. it wasn't until after the big storm that they got bad.
  6. I don't think anybody realized it was an anchor until the picture was posted.

  9. grace, with respect to your post, an MLU would not have saved Kelly James. The discussion on personal locating devices is here. please go there to continue your mission in convincing all climbers that they are nescesary. PLU thread

    update...

    yeah, of course
  21. I think anything is possible at this point. They may have been storm bound on the summit and just picked a direction to head down other then the face they just climbed up. No one knows if they had a compass or map to navigate. They could have gone any direction in the whiteout. The scope of the search is now nearly the entire mountain.
  22. a valid theory. it has happened to me, I can tell you that much. but your assumtion about Kelly James is uncalled for and extremely disrespectful. I am sure the rescuers have been investigating the scene and will have the best indication of why there were two snowcaves dug. my guess is he tried to self rescue in the storm but didn't make it far in the brutal conditions and dug in again. no one is to blame for underestimating the weather. it has happened to the best of all mountain climbers. some, unfortunately are not so lucky. and by the way, I think we will know why once they bring the other two home tommorow.
  23. mountain jumper, search for "cluck's" post a few pages back. he has posted the only firsthand info today, after coming down off the mountain. yeah well, sorry about that...I think we were all a bit upset earlier today...not one of my better days.
  24. It has been proven that many of the people getting into trouble on Cascade Volcanoes are traveling in from out of state. They likely have been planning for months, have unrefundable plane tickets and dreams of success...and are therefore willing to take more risk with the weather. Local climbers are usually more flexible with their schedules and more likely to postpone a trip and wait for a better weather window. This type of event is not all that uncommon in the PNW, just more highly publisized for some reason. Year after year people from out of state are lost on Rainier, Baker, Shasta and other peaks. Threads like this are even common on this web site, there are usually one or two rescue threads a year. The diffrence being this time cascadeclimbers.com was quoted by major media sources. This is somewhat of an assumption on my part, but I think it is fairly accurate.
  25. Joseph, mattp will go through and use his discression tommorow. right now he's probly in bed.
