  2. quote: Originally posted by forrest_m: Sounds like maybe all the climbers escaped, but some are still "in hiding" up in the mountains: from Ananova.com: Climber Haston safe after Himalayan rescue British climber Stevie Haston is reportedly safe after escaping from armed rebels in Nepal - but his French-born wife is still trapped on the mountain. Along with 11 members of the Slovenian expedition they were seized by the gunmen while returning from a climb of the 22,145ft Ramtang Chang peak. The Maoist gunmen demanded £4,000 for their release but the climbers escaped before the ransom was paid. They managed to descend a perilous cliff where rebels could not follow them. After they then went into hiding awaiting a Nepalese army attempt to airlift them out of the region by helicopter. But the rescue mission was called off because of a build up of rebel troops in the area and renewed violence. Expedition organisers then acted on their own initiative to rescue their colleagues after learning one of the climbers was taken seriously ill. A small private helicopter was engaged to fly to the group to try and pull at least the injured man to safety. Both Haston and the leader of another expedition, Gregor Kresal, were collected along with the injured man. In Haston's case he only agreed to leave his wife because he was the only one with extensive medical training - and he had to accompany the injured trekker. Hmmmm... I sense another bestseller for Greg Child to ghostwrite! Soon to be a TV movie of the week starring Paulie Shore as Stevie and Britney Spears as Laurence.

  4. The Maoist rebels in Nepal have taken a group of Western climbers hostage. Stevie Haston and Laurence Goualt (his wife) were among them . Stevie apparently has now escaped, leaving his wife captive! The rebels are demanding $7,000 as ransom. Yes, $7, 000. Who is advising them, Dr. Evil or what??? Better hope they dont send in the Russians to rescue them. Read all about it on Ananova.com Link: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_698308.html?menu=

They got the pix from topping out on couloir on. The other film is safe in my jacket pocket. But I lost the good sequence of Steven wigging out as he climbs up a sheet of dinner plate ice to the top-out. Also the cool profile shot of Plutus from Crazy. And a few nice sunset pix of the Bendor range and some good scrambling pix and summit shot of the Elastoplast Bandage summit register c. 1954. I guess I should have carried the pack around with me even though it was full of smelly gear. Hindsight is always 20:20.
  19. Interestingly enough, I read in "Sensory Exotica" by Howard C. Hughes, that when they built the Stealth Bomber they made it invisible to radar but didnt know it was also invisible to sonar. That is until, they left it parked outside the hangar one fine desert night, and in the morning it was covered with dead bats that had flown into it because it was "invisible". Sort of like Wonder Woman's invisible plane. Anna, are you really Wonder Woman or what?
