1130am - Cold and windy at parking lot - about 25 degrees with 15-20 mph winds. Once out of the parking lot it continued to stay consistently windy and cold to the base of panorama point. Been a long time since I was able to hike in fleece, shell, and balaclava and not get hot. Half way up panorama point it was real icy, and w/o some sort of crampons - it would be a real tough endeavor. We had snow shoes so the teeth helped us gain the top of panorama point. The wind was blowing about 40-50mph+. After hurdling a few small ice/snow barriers to gain the ridge, the wind started to calm down a little bit once we reached McClure Rock. The rest of the trip was a slog, with 50% patches of ice mixed with 2 inches of spindrift - so the traversing on snowshoes really sucked. We set our turnaround time for 330pm. A member of our team shot ahead and was kicking ass, but never knew we had a turnaround time. We reached 9000' at 330pm and decided to have lunch there. Sergio was a few hundred feet above us and came down to us as well while our other member w/o a radio continued on. We waited for a long time but got cold so we put on our skis (Sergio had a splitboard) and started heading down. The first 1500 feet were okay, with good snow followed by patches of ice - so it was a challenge. From 7500' on down it was a real challenge as it was pure ice. The descent down panorama point was a little hairy as it was like pure ice. The lower portion to the car was all heavy/wet snow and real slow. Down in 45 minutes (I liked that part) First time descending the snowfield opn skis and I liked it, even though I hiked my downhill boots up since I have no randonee setup. (I was a gaper) *******At least I didn't wear my down jacket in Kirkland like Sergio

Has anybody done any bouldering out by Surprise Lake? I was snowshoeing out there this Saturday and saw some good sized boulders that appeared to be pretty cool if the didn't have 7 feet of snow on them. Curious.........

I've got an older HP Photosmart C200 Digital. One of the first digitals that were affordable, but it is only 1.2MB. What's so incredible is I take it everywhere, and it survives. Frozen, wet, dropped, you name it, it has seen it. Not good quality images, but I dont have to worry about losing or breaking it, kind of like Gas Station Sunglasses u know? -
I really suck - I don't think any of you want me on your rope - by the time you yelled "falling" and I reacted, it would have taken me 1 minute and 29 seconds to recognize the situation

Can anyone tell me mileage and access? I know that you take FR 62 from hwy 2, but the Skykomish Ranger told me that the gate is open but we would not get that far on it. So how far is it from the gate to the climbers path? What is the mileage from there to the summit? Thanks for any info. scott@nwog.org

If there are any of you that are experts on this area please check it out and let me know if I got some of those lakes labeled correctly. It was my first time up there and we had to go fast and quick to make the traverse. Didn't even get to summit Little Annapurna which bummed me out, but it was one of the most beautiful non glacier hikes I have ever done. Thanks! Enchantment Lakes Traverse

In my home office I got the ever famous aerial image of Rainier from the North, you know the rectangular pano one like they got at VW. Downstairs I got another image of Rainier from the Carbon River moraine near Mystic Lake, a blown up image of Dragontail by Freya Lake by Bob Bolton, and another image of my wife at Pikers Peak on Adams. Now in the hallway we have the 2 of us on the summit of Shasta, and then a shot of the Ingraham Direct route on Rainier as well. Surprised I got no images of Pilchuck? Me too.One of my favorites is a 4 panel frame with different images of Rainier, with my favorite one taken by Phil Fortier of the Carbon Glacier. I am not sure how, but I saw it as a desktop image on a friends computer as well, who barely know how to get on the internet. I swear Phil, you need to sell that one, it is so awesome. I consider myself another lucky one, as I married one that likes to hike and climb as well. Hell, 3 years ago she couldn't even beg me to go on a hike, now I am either with her, or leaving her at home when she doesn't feel like it (doobin it I think). Anyway - I always like to hear her say "Honey, when are we gonna bag another volcano?" Peace out

Northwest Outdoors GuideI have finally redesigned my database of hikes that I have done this past year. Although it is still outdated, I am currently adding about 22 more trip reports. Let me know any feedback, etc - good or bad. Thanks! Scott scott@nwog.org

you are a smart ass, so I guess I will try it and then tell you about it. Simply said

that is the other website! But I cannot find anything else other than those 2 pages and Beckey. Any other resources I am overlooking?

Has anyone ever been up this peak on the Mountain Loop Highway just NNW of the Big 4 Range?(Topo: http://topozone.com/map.asp?lat=48.06056&lon=-121.53861) I read Beckey's route description and it seems do-able, but the only beta I could find was off of Eric's Base Camp (http://ericsbasecamp.net/trips/HallPkArea/HallPkArea.htm)and another website I cannot recall. The West Ridge is what I think is the most do-able climb, so any thoughts or info would be appreciated. ThanksScottscott@nwog.org Hall Peak from Big 4 trailhead on Mountain Loop Highway

Colin, I went up on Saturday to Snow Lake and saw plenty of Backcountry skiing going on. It looked real good in the basin below Chair Peak, especially in some of the couliors that some folks had skiied. The snow pack was solid and there had not been many slab releases at all, just a few small ones on the upper part of traverse to the basin. I got some images I got put on the web, so send me an email later to remind me. L8R
