Rad Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Ben's blog suggests parts of the UTW are closed due to nesting falcons. Anyone know what routes are affected? Thx Quote
keenwesh Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Is this a "smart" closure where the birds are actually being monitored and the ban will be lifted once they leave their nest? Hoping it's not like the Flatirons, where the 3rd is closed 6 months out of the year, with or without nesting birds. Quote
DCramer Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 That's the flyer from last year but the closure area is the same. End date is 7/1/14 unless there is no nest. I placed flyers out at Index several weeks ago. Maybe they need replacing. Quote
Good2Go Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Ha! Didn't even notice the dates. I climbed DHLA a couple times last year before July. Never had a clue about the closure, and based on the number of people I had to wait behind, nobody else did either. The birds didn't seem to mind. Wonder if the base jumpers are aware. Quote
Rad Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 Thanks. Maybe someone should post this at the trailhead by the Country so it will be seen before people hike up the hill. R Quote
wayne Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Anyone know if Midnight Rock is closed? I couldn't find anything current on line. Thanks Quote

mattp Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Today State Parks said that the birds are actually nesting on The Diamond this year. A revised closure designation is pending. Quote
Rad Posted April 14, 2014 Author Posted April 14, 2014 Matt, Can you post it here when it comes out. Thanks, Rad Quote
mattp Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 The cliff we call the Diamond will be closed to climbing pending further notice. This wall is along the Upper Town Wall row of cliffs, off to the far right from cliffs drawing more climbing activity such as the main Upper Town Wall (Heaven's Gate, Davis-Holland and Town Crier), or The Cheeks (The Beach; The Zipper). Centerfold is probably the most popular climb on The Diamond. Read more about it on the Washington Climbers Coalition web site, along with information on over 30 different areas around the state and information about access issues and stewardship efforts. Find viewable image and information at Washington Climbers Coalition page on Index. Quote
