Trip: Mt Hood - Reid HW

Date: 3/9/2013

Trip Report:

Climbed the Reid on March 9, taking more time than I'd like to admit. It was a long day.... Conditions were good except for the powder wallowing others mentioned. The deep wallowing resulted in us backing off the 1st gully approach and ascending via the Leuthold's start thanks to the party before us who left a boot pack up the first part. Found some decent ice in the gullies. Otherwise it was all either soft snow or neve. Beautiful day on the mountain.

Last pic below is of a party of 2 who were on Yocum ridge. Was pretty cool to watch them perched on that tiny pinnacle.

Gear Notes:

Took several pickets and screws and tools. Used all but that's cause we're pansies. Would've been fine solo.

Approach Notes:

Skins to I-saddle, slog across the Reid.

Not too late to throw that last (very cool) pic in the photo contest is it? Would make a nice alpine and/or scenic entry imo.

What do you think Nastia?

It certainly would make for one of the best contenders if not for anything, but for its rock quality.

What an amazing rock, fantastic rock, so solid and clean! Just begging to be picked, and if you don't like its location, go ahead and move it around .

I don't think we were ever visible from from the Sandy, and even if we were it would have been dark since we didn't summit till 10ish. That's be our second ski down the mountain in the dark this season, woohoo!

And hats off to the wingnuts on Yocum, that was some stout climbing!
