JeffreyR Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Has anyone done that Lake Angeles Cirque route (II, 4) mentioned in the latest edition of the OMR climbing guide? There is almost no information available elsewhere... Quote
turnpikegates Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 I'm interested in the same line after reading the OMG over the past few weeks. I'm planning to hike in and check it out next week sometime if my partner is up for it. So far the only evidence I've found that it gets climbed is this photo on flickr: Quote
JeffreyR Posted December 22, 2011 Author Posted December 22, 2011 That is the only evidence I have ever seen of a recent ascent. Let me know how it looks. It will be interesting to see what it is like in these abnormal conditions. Quote
turnpikegates Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I'm planning to hike in on Tuesday to have a look. I'll let you know how it goes. Quote
OlympicMtnBoy Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 My guess is that picture is just from the ice climbing up there and not the long snow/ice route listed in the book. There is some decent ice that forms up there near the lake most years for some ok single pitch cragging (except for the long approach and short days when its in). I think that picture you linked to is of someone on the ice flow to the far right of this pic from the same person: I've never heard of someone climbing the 1200 ft. line recently but it shouldn't be hard to climb something up to the ridge, lots of options. I would guess most people humping ice gear up there go for the shorter but harder ice flows instead of steep snow. Also might be pretty dry this year so maybe not enough snow right now? Ice climbing could be cool though without the snowpack, post pics if you go up there! Quote
cdmike112 Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Hiked up to Lake Angeles today, there are several ice climbs that are in and overall in pretty good condition. I climbed a 100ft section of WI3 and continued up the drainage to the ridge line. There looks like there are several mixed lines to also be had. Quote
cdmike112 Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 (edited) I somehow forgot my camera but have some footage of the cirque from my head cam. Here is a link to footage. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10100172206458943&saved#!/photo.php?v=10100172202067743&set=vb.27204921&type=2&permPage=1 and a close up of one of the moderate ice lines. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10100172206458943&saved#!/photo.php?v=10100172206458943&set=vb.27204921&type=2&permPage=1 There is a another moderate line in the center of the cirque, looks like WI3 also, it looks like there is no decent, you would have to build an anchor and rap. cdmike112 Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I went back up on Monday and took some pics, enjoy. Quote
JeffreyR Posted December 28, 2011 Author Posted December 28, 2011 Wow! That looks pretty cool. I will have to go check it out some time (except the ice is probably all gone by now with the rain). were you top roped? Quote
cdmike112 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Yes it is possible to set up a top rope on the flow to the far right, it is probably easier to lead the climb and then set an anchor, there are several bomber trees to do so. There does not look like there is an easy way to the top of the rest of the routes with out leading them. Quote
