dgjessee Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Looking for a weather window on Hood... Saturday looks decent enough. Any thoughts on the South Side routes? Were hoping to do Sandy Glacier or head up through Old Chute if we have to. Quote
dgjessee Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 OK Saturday doesnt look that good - an suggestions on a good window between Saturday, May 14 and Saturday, May 21? Quote

Julian Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 From everything I've heard (i.e. complaints in my Facebook news feed), "Hood weather window" has been pretty much an oxymoron this year. Quote
pcg Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I was looking at trying tonight but watching the weather real close Note the warming trend that peaks tonight and Saturday morning - not good for snow stability. Quote
Water Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 april 22 and 23 were good.. though on the 22nd it was 8-10 degrees at the hogsback.. didnt feel like spring climb even in the sun Quote
Maine-iac Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Just bring a really long rope and then it does not matter what the weather is. Just keep going upwards until you can not go up any further, then once you reach that spot check your GPS and any other fancy devices you have to make sure you are not just standing on some pillar, then start following that rope back down and you will always be able to get to where you started. Pretty fail safe in my opinion. Quote
Maine-iac Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Oh one more thing. Climbing in bad weather/bad conditions builds character. It can't be nice for all your climbs, so if you only know how to climb in nice weather what are you going to do if bad weather comes in? Quote
DPS Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Just bring a really long rope and then it does not matter what the weather is. Pretty fail safe in my opinion. Everybody has opinions and they are all worth what you pay for them. Here is mine. As a general rule, try not to climb up into a storm. Even more fail safe. Quote
ivan Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 the most painful hood lesson i've learned is don't leave the p-lot in the midst of a driving rainstorm - musta poured a gallon of water out of each plastic boot up at silcox before bailing in a full-on hypothermic breakdown that said, my favorite hood climb perhaps was a solo of luetholds in a winter gale - clear skies, but at least 60 mph winds the whole day - never done a hood climb 'cept that one where i wore an 8000 meter down parka from p-lot to summit, w/o a single stop of more than 30 seconds!
