sobo Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 KING 5 article Anyone know more about this? Haven't seen anything here on cc.com after a search. My condolences to her family and friends. I heard a rumor that she was a member of a local mountain rescue unit. Quote
iluka Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Long thread about this on TAY for several days now... a very sad story. http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=19425.0 Quote
AlpineK Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 (edited) Monika was a cool chick and a great skier. I got a call from a member of SPART last Wednesday about a possible search/rescue. At the time he was vague about identifying her, but he gave enough clues to prove my ID guess correct. The weather was crappy at the pass Thursday and Friday, but good enough yesterday. A search team with dogs found her body yesterday afternoon. Here's a picture of her from 2010 Ski In [img:center]https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_rxgbPHdbZ9I/S98fTCAd2fI/AAAAAAAAAWc/v0llwo5wQQE/s576/25-Monika.gif[/img] Edited February 6, 2011 by Feck Quote
lightD Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I believe the BARK guys, along with some friends of hers were responsible for finding her. The retrieval took place today I think. Not an easy operation with the rain, crappy snow and complex terrain back there. Sad news indeed. I didn't know her but it turns out a few of my friends did. I also figured out that I know a couple folks involved in the rescue. Sometimes when you meet someone new in the BC it feels a bit random but it can also feel like its the same small set of people sharing the experience, even if you haven't traded names yet. This whole episode is reinforcing that feeling for me. Be safe. See you all outside soon. Quote
sobo Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 I believe the BARK guys... LD, Thanks for that info on BARK. I had heard that she was involved with MR, but no one in my MR circles knew her. Now it makes sense. Quote
sweatinoutliquor Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Wow, just read through the TAY thread. What a sad story. She sounded like a really awesome person. Quote
bobinc Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Very sorry to hear of this. I ran into her in about 2004 on the N. side of Mt. Hood. It was obvious she was an expert skiier. I know she did several first descents. Condolences to her family and friends. Quote

sobo Posted February 11, 2011 Author Posted February 11, 2011 Thanks, powdrx and CC. Well worth the time spent reading that. I never knew her, but obviously she was really something and touched a lot of people, and was a force to be reckoned with. Very, very sad... Quote
