Lodestone Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Every once in a while I come away from Powell's with a nice old book. A chapter on Beacon is included too. What's that saying about the best climbing in Oregon? Chad Quote
billcoe Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Sweet find Chad, how much did you spend? Here's the back cover. Notice that the book seems to have help up better than all of us old guys:-) New books coming out soon that will have all that info and lots of new stuff too. Here's Tim after uncovering one of his 15 year old bolts that was under 3-5" of moss. LOL! BTW, Jeffs wife, Sonya, is looking for copies of all his old works to give to their kids if you see any and want to donate to a good cause. I think she has that one but can't get Oregon High and doesn't want to pay $50+ a copy. Quote
blynne Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Just to throw this out there for Jeff's family... UW Libraries holds 3 of Jeff Thomas's books in Special Collections: - A climber's guide to Smith Rock, Beacon Rock and Stein's Pillar (1978) - Oregon high: a climbing guide to nine Cascade volcanoes (1991) - Oregon rock: a climber's guide (1983) Quote
wayne Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Nice, I remember being pretty stoked to see that book come out. It was the first readily available update since the Dodge guide! That could have been the bolt we hid under the moss above High and Mighty? Quote
billcoe Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I think it is Wayne. Tim mentioned that you guys put a rock over it, the moss grew thick over the rock, but that's how Tim found it, by feeling for the bump that marked the rock. The stud is looking great, but the nut is looking fairly weathered. Close up. Quote
wayne Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Wow, let me get my reading glasses out. I still insist that H+M is one of the greatest climbs on the besodden. Some Powderhound type needs to make it so. Quote

Lodestone Posted January 19, 2011 Author Posted January 19, 2011 Sweet find Chad, how much did you spend? Here's the back cover. Notice that the book seems to have help up better than all of us old guys:-) It was $10. Great condition too. So is that Mr. Thomas in the red shirt? Chad Quote
Plaidman Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 It was $10. Great condition too. So is that Mr. Thomas in the red shirt? Chad Yes it is. Quote
billcoe Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 So is that Mr. Thomas in the red shirt? MR. Thomas? ! MR.?! LOL! No, Chad don't be silly, of course that is NOT Mr, Thomas. That is Mr. Thomas's son. (Plaidman should know better:-) Jeff shared this picture of him and his father (Mr Thomas) (who sounded like a real great guy) climbing in the Gunks back in the day. He didn't say don't share the photo of The Arrow, or I wouldn't. It's not just "awesome" it's so classic that it's Sofa King awesome. Chocks were just about to enter America. Hiking boots...check.... Hip Belay....check... Hammers and pitons....check.... Where's Off White, this was his era was it knott? Quote
corvallisclimb Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 I just wish Tim would swap out his 5/16 bolts and homemade hangers for some real hardware! Cheers Tim! Quote
