Dennis_the_Menace Posted August 21, 2001 Posted August 21, 2001 Sitting having a beer in New Paltz, NY arguing/discussing loudly over a particular route in Dick Williams guidebook (Gunks) when this skinny grey haired older gentleman offers his unsolicited opinion, at which time my "very observant" egotistic partner told him to "shove off". (Yes it was Dick Williams and yes I did follow him outside, apologize profusely and he signed my guidebook - Cool guy) Quote

It reminded me of whay I saw in Belgium near Marche le Dames. So Will maybe you can answer this....did the Army kick people out of the area when training was on-going? Or did climbers get the fun of watching the Army circus while they climbed. I was there in Dec. but I heard there was a nude beach down below on the river that you could see from the top of Yonah. There's a route in Belgium and it's called March of Dimes? Wow Quote

Matt Posted August 21, 2001 Posted August 21, 2001 I watched Jerry Moffet in Arapiles walk up a 5.13. He was like Spiderman. On my first trip to the Gunks I spent an hour watching Lynn Hill work something heinous. I brushed shoulders with Derek Hersey in Eldorado Canyon. I didn't know who he was at the time. Quote
haireball Posted August 22, 2001 Posted August 22, 2001 beers for Dru & Scott P at the megafest!!! you guys are good!!! one of my all-time favorite legend encounters was when a Polish acquaintance, a local electrician who braved the Iron Curtain in the trunk of his girlfriend's (now his wife) car, phoned me up and invited me to Gustavs for a beer with an old climbing buddy of his from out of town. Andre's British friend "Chris" was in Seattle on business, and was making a side-trip to 11worth to visit him. Andre wanted a few climbers to make "Chris" welcome. I was somewhat tongue-tied & awestruck that evening to find myself swapping yarns at Gustav's with Mr. Chris Bonington!!! Quote

Dru Posted August 22, 2001 Posted August 22, 2001 Does anybody know the story of Pat Littlejohn's visit to L'worth? When he put up "By The Sea"? What else did he do? Quote
nolanr Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 Went into the Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop, CA this week, which is a showcase for the photography of Galen Rowell, and Mr. Rowell was in his office. But he was on the phone the whole time, so I didn't get to meet him. I think that qualifies as a legend, and not local. Quote
Dru Posted September 4, 2001 Posted September 4, 2001 I saw Rowell do a slideshow once and it stank. it would have been better if he had just shut up and shown pictures but he rambled on about a bunch of disconnected shit. he got out of synch - he was showing pictures of airplanes and still spieling about undersea exploration. now i understand why his partners in throne room of the mtn gods were so pissed at him... nolanr Posted September 5, 2001 Posted September 5, 2001 Cavey, that's so unneccessary. He was around, and no I wouldn't have pulled his pecker for him. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted September 5, 2001 Posted September 5, 2001 I had to check from the way you came across Quote
nolanr Posted September 7, 2001 Posted September 7, 2001 I wouldn't pull yours either, so don't even ask. Quote
